Is there a reason why MakeMKV won't make an ISO of a first generation Legally Blonde DVD, but DVDecrypter, a piece of software over 20 years old, will? Surely MakeMKV is more up to date with decryption?

I've never had this issue before, but if you have Windows and use Xreveal to break the encryption (if the disc is indeed encrypted), you can then use IMGBurn to make a 1:1 backup, apparently.

Yes, I'm aware. That's the problem, though. Why a 20 year old piece of software can create the ISO and MakeMKV can't. Don't know if there is some Log file somewhere that would explain why MakeMKV had issues. Just thought it was strange - although I'm guessing most use it for Bluray anyway.

Funny, as I have multiple Disney DVDs where DVD Decrypter dies because of memory leaks, as the discs have way too many playlists than a DVD should usually have, which is a way of copy protection Disney uses. MakeMKV backups those discs without a problem.

Well, I've been away from home on vacation until this evening. Didn't think this was a situation that would justify flying back home early. Many newer-ish Disney DVDs use RipGuard which prevents DVD Decryptor from working. The Tin Collection is fairly old at this point - like 15-20 years old. Chronological Donald (Duck) volumes 1 through 3 were able to be ripped to ISO with both MakeMVK and DVD Decryptor, but Volume 4 would only work with MakeMKV since it DID have RipGuard. Both Mickey Collections worked with both. Goofy only worked with DVD Decryptor. I'm still not sure the reason. I will try to rip again and see exactly what MakeMKV says is the problem when I get time. I have 4 drives, so it IS possible I used different drives, and that is the reason it worked one time and not the other. I usually try a different drive if an ISO fails on MakeMKV fails with one, though. Indeed sometimes another drive works just fine for a myriad of reasons.

It only had the problem with Disc 2; Disc 1 ripped just fine. I tried with two different drives, one modern and one very old. Same result on the Goofy DVD

I looked at your error codes and saw several other people report the issue you're having. I don't think a full workaround was ever found, which is odd since MakeMKV is failing to create a full ISO backup, not just an MKV rip.

There is also one (?) person who reported the same error code upon opening an ISO file (not a disc), and this person was able to make the issue go away by going to View -> Preferences -> Protection and changing the DVD structure protection removal method to CellTrim. So maybe this would be worth trying, even if I am not getting my hopes up. The other removal methods may be worth trying as well, just in case.

If the above fails, and you don't mind doing further testing, could you please test with other versions of MakeMKV ? Such as 1.18.4 here : https://www.makemkv.com/download/Setup_ ... 1.18.4.exe

Or even some older versions of MakeMKV here : https://makemkv.com/download/old/

I am not asking you to try every single version, of course, but could you please just try maybe 3-4 ? Like, for example, if 1.18.4 also fails, could you please move back a few version numbers and try again ? No need to try with every drive, either. Just one or two will do.

I'm glad that Region code 2 (PAL) DVD's are easy to rip/copy.
Legally Blonde 1, Legally Blonde 2, Legally Blondes, + Blonde and Blonder copy just fine.

I'm glad that Region code 2 (PAL) DVD's are easy to rip/copy.

It has nothing to do with the region codes. I just made an ISO of a Region 2 disc and have done many both US and UK DVDs. Libredrive ignores the region code. The problem is with MakeMKV and certain DVDs. I've isolated the problem with really old DVDs, usually first generation, so perhaps it's an ageing, as you all spell it, issue or maybe those DVD authoring infrastructures are different slightly than modern DVDs. For all that I mentioned, MakeMKV would make MKVs, but I like the ISOs to preserve the navigation structure. No worries as I was able to rip all that I wanted.

Nice Linux plug, but it's more a testament to Windows that a 20 + year old program still runs. There is a benefit to uniformity.

I never had luck with the Disney DVDs, but Legally Blonde did work with MakeMKV on an older version and different drive.

Since the problem seems to be limited to first generation DVDs, it may be due to a problem with the disc. Perhaps DVD Decrypter has some type of error correction built in.

Since it's likely no solution exists, I'm glad to have kept the old programs from my youth. For what it's worth, I found another DVD that MakeMKV would not rip, but DVD Decrypter would: PIglet's Big Movie. Maybe it's really a Disney issue. For the most part. I will experiment more later about the different structure removal methods to see if it makes a difference. IT doesn't seem to so far...?

For what it's worth, I have several old systems with REALLY old DVD drives on them. Sometimes these old DVD drives can read discs modern drives can't read. Perhaps the laser is stronger? Reading lens bigger or more sensitive? No idea, but that's why I keep the old machines. I will try to see if the drive makes a difference, too. Even with modern drives, the slimline drives seem more picky than the large tower drives. I think.
