Verbatim 43888 seems to be not work

Post by bimbi »

Hello all,

since my old drive was unfortunately no repairable, I bought a new UHD drive from Verbatim (43888) to test it out (I can return it). Unfortunately, it can't read any of my UHD Blu-rays correctly. MakeMKV simply waiting indefinitely while reading the discs, no error message, just “Scanning CD-ROM devices”.
I then checked out the ARCH wiki article and followed the instructions. The output of

Code: Select all

bd_info /dev/sr1
shows this:

Code: Select all

Using libbluray version 1.4.1

According to this forum post, the Drive should work, right?
But this message appears in the output: "mmc.c:394: AACS not active or supported by the drive". In my opinion, this suggests that the firmware doesn't support AACS. But further down, it says “AACS handled: yes”. That's a contradiction, isn't it?

What's also strange is that this is a 4K UHD display, but the output only shows 1080p.

Many thanks :)

Copy and paste the MakeMKV drive info and Libredrive info sections for the drive.
Cheers :D

I would like to do, but MakeMKV doesn't even get that far. It's stuck in an endless loop saying “Scanning CD-ROM devices.” I also updated to version 2.0 → same behavior. That was also the reason why I tried to open the Blu-ray manually (Arch Wiki).
I'm using Kubuntu 26.04 LTS here.

Don't use v2.0.0 as it has issues. On Linux, you should probably use v1 17.7 to v1 18.4.

Ensure there is no disc in the drive! Open MakeMKV then copy and paste the drive info and Libredrive info sections.

Just FYI, you should let the os initialize a disc before opening MakeMKV.

It needs to be flashed to read UHD discs. UHD discs require Libredrive to be enabled.

Flash it to BU40N 1.03-MK then flash again to BU40N 1.00. The first flash removes firmware encryption and the second flash is because v1. 00 works better than 1.03-MK on Linux.

Okay, I see. Good to know that's possible.
I'd also appreciate a few links to help me flash the drive correctly. The drive cost almost €200 here in Austria, so I'd want to kill it ;)
A notebook with windows 11 is also available if needed.

If you can use the windows machine, you can flash it using the SDFtool Flasher GUI (see SDFtool Flasher thread). Just install MakeMKV on it in the default location before running the flasher.

If you want to flash it on Linux, there are commands you can use (see Ultimate UHD drive guide 2026).

Thanks for your answer. If I understand this right, first I have to flash to "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin" and after to "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.01-RM01801-211910161032.bin"?
