Unstable BDR-UD03

Post by Xehelios »

My BDR-UD03 is completely unreliable and I can't figure out why. I flashed it using @Billycar11, so I know that worked. But then, when I insert a UHD disc, I briefly see it in Finder and then I lose it. When I try to launch MakeMKV, I get a bunch of

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY'
https://cloud.civera.ca/01a0ebc6-c04d-7 ... 0147bc5dc2

I cleaned the lens, as recommended by @Billycar11 (before it wouldn't even accept a UHD disc)

I'm wondering if it has to do with the power supply. I'm using a chenyang SATA 22Pin Male to Slimline SATA 13 Female and a BENFEI SATA to USB 3.0 Cable connected directly to a Thunderbolt 4 port on my Mac Studio. These adapters work fine with my slim BU40N drive.

Otherwise, maybe I just got a lemon?

Any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated.

looks like power issue
you also have the 12v power connected to the adapter?

Those are exactly the symptoms you get when the drive isn't receiving the minimum 0.9 A of power.
Do you have a way to connect the drive to an external enclosure for slimline optical drives?

Well, I just put my drives in the enclosure of the Archgon UHD USB-C.

Now, I get errors like

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/AACS/Content000.cer' at offset '0'
or
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading 'BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD04 1.14 PLDL337010WL' at offset '14876672'
or
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020..03F to device 'IoKit:/IOBDServices/B2910A8F'

And MakeMKV is very capricious. I had to restart it a few times before it saw the disc and offered to do something with it. For what it's worth, regular Blu-rays work. I only encounter issues with UHD mediums.

Are you using any USB adapter or hub?
Is the enclosure connected directly to a USB port on the computer?
Are you using a good quality or the original USB cable?

Try connecting the drive through a powered USB hub with its own external power supply.
Also try using a USB Y-cable with two USB plugs to provide additional power.
This will help rule out a power delivery issue with the drive with 100% certainty.

Symptoms of insufficient power delivery on Pioneer drives very often look exactly like what you described: problems detecting UHD discs, random SCSI errors, read operations hanging, and having to restart MakeMKV or reconnect the drive.

Thanks a lot, @skyrider, really appreciated your message.

I think I now narrowed it down to a bad enclosure. I just tried the same Archgon USB-C enclosure with another drive (flashed BU40N) and I'm getting all sorts of new errors that I didn't get before, although the drive itself works fine when using the adapters. So at this point, I'm thinking my enclosure is dead, but that's the only one I have at the moment.

Clearly, the chenyang SATA 22-pin male to Slimline SATA 13 Female and a BENFEI SATA to USB 3.0 Cable don't provide enough power to the Pioneer drive. I tried to use it with an additional USB power supply connected to it. I'm connected directly to the Thunderbolt 4 port on a Mac Studio, so power delivery shouldn't be an issue (I can power displays). My cables are good (tested the USB power delivery with a dongle). I think the Pioneer drive just doesn't like those adapter. I've also noticed that the Pioneer drive is more "reliable" when using the enclosure (doesn't disappear from Finder), but MakeMKV can't get anything out of it, which is also what happened when using the BU40N, so I'm thinking the enclosure solves the power delivery problem, but since it's broken, I can't use it.

I ordered a Silverstone case for the Pioneer drive. It should arrive next week. I'll report ASAP.

You need to attach a 12V power supply to the Benfei adapter.

Sorry if I was unclear, but I did. I attached the white 12V power supply it came with using the cable provided. In the meantime, I also tried using the SATA adapter from the OWC Mercury Pro and connect it to the Slim SATA adapter, but that didn't work either. I also tried another 12V/2A adapter with a USB-C cable supporting 100 W.

Now, UHD discs don't even read at all. They either get spit out or I get

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading 'BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UDO4 1.14 PLDL337010WL' at offset '524288'
Unless someone has a miracle solution, I'll just return it.
