The Batman (2022) 4k not detected on BP60NB10

Hi all! First post here.

I've been using my BP60NB10 for a couple months now and haven't had any issues until about a week ago I tried to rip Godzilla Minus One. The bluray disc worked fine, but the 4k disc for the movie wasn't being detected. I assumed it was a disc issue because my other 4ks were still working fine, so I returned it. Now I just picked up The Batman and tried to rip that one, but same issue. The bluray disc reads and rips fine, but the 4k disc isn't being detected. It isn't that it's failing the rip, but that it's not being detected at all.

Is this a drive issue? Disc issue? Firmware issue? Any advice is appreciated.

There's two possible issues: 1) the disc is bad or 2) the laser went bad and can't break the third layer since this is a triple layer disc.

In reality you should try and get additional drives. This way you can test if it's a bad disc or a bad drive.

Thank you. I’m looking into getting another drive to try to cover my bases going forward. I was considering something like a Verbatim 43890 as an affordable backup.

Do only some 4k movies use that third layer? I tested some of my other 4Ks and they still show up fine. If it’s only some, is there a resource to see which movies are like that? I might have some I could check for comparison.

The first thing to try is to always clean the disc! Most 4K UHD discs require cleaning before being read as they often have an invisible layer of film on them from the manufacturing process. Usually a good wipe down with a microfibre cloth does the trick but occasionally a more thorough clean using soapy water is required. If this is the case, wash with soapy water and dry with a microfibre cloth then let air dry overnight.

There are also rare occasions where a drive just doesn't like a certain disc and simply won't read it. It sounds silly but it does happen! This is why most of us have multiple drives. Usually, if one drive won't read a disc, another drive will.

Not all 4K movies are triple layer discs. 4K movies come in two options BD-66 and BD-100. BD-66 are dual layer discs and BD-100 are triple layer discs. Technically there is a BD-128 (4 layers) option, but no one is manufacturing that for 4K movies.

Use Blu-Ray.com to find out what disc the movie used. I know for a fact, The Batman is a triple layer disc for the UHD disc because I have it in my collection.

I initially bought a single drive, like yourself, but after 2 years, I was noticing it struggled on triple layer discs. Instead of arguing with stores to get a replacement or spending more money on discs, I figured it was worth getting a couple more drives to test to see if it was a disc issue or a drive issue. It does suck right now with the high prices of drives, but it saves you a headache.

If it still fails on multiple drives, then you can do as Marty mentioned where you try and clean the disc, then the laser.

I tested a few other triple layer discs today that all worked fine. So the only ones I've so far had issues with are Godzilla Minus One and The Batman.

If only certain triple layer discs aren't working, could it still be a drive issue or does that mean it's definitely a disc issue? It sounds like I should probably purchase a second drive regardless for the future, but just wanting to know if that won't help here.

If it's only certain triple layer discs, I'm inclined to assume it's the disc.
