Issue with full disk backup for Grease UHD

Post by TheShoe »

Using latest version (v18.0.1), I ripped Grease UHD to a full disc folder backup.

Here's some interesting results:

1: MakeMKV: Audio stutters with dropped frames from full-disc playback

2: XReveal: Audio stutters with dropped frames from full-disc playback

3: DVDFab: Audio is fine. Menu playback does not work. Title playback works fine.

It seems DVDFab does something to the java (I think) files, rendering menu playback useless however the video/audio work.

For MakeMKV and XReveal, menu works fine however the audio stutters and there are dropped frames.

I may try a rip to .mkv next to see if the resulting MKV is fine.

Playback is via Media Center (JRiver) which supports full-menu based playback as well as title (.mpls) playback

In my experience, audio stuttering and dropped frames with UHD playback are usually the result of a computer that's not quite capable. Either the CPU isn't quite fast enough, or the I/O capability isn't quite enough, or something in the background is consuming enough resources to affect playback.

For instance, my old computer, using MPV, can barely playback a UHD rip using the CPU. If much of anything is running the background, I get dropped frames. If I hit CTRL-h to switch MPV to use hardware decoding (Intel Quick Sync Video), then performance improves dramatically. I don't ever have any issues playing back regular blu-rays or DVDs. UHDs, on the other hand, require a lot more computer power to playback.

My PC is ancient by modern standards, but can still play UHDs because its graphics card can decode H265 in hardware. When using mpv, check whether its output contains a line like:

Code: Select all

Using hardware decoding (vaapi).

It's not that. My PC is quite overpowered for even UHD playback.

This is one UHD rip out of hundreds at this point.

The last test I'll do is rip directly to MKV vs full-disc and see if the issue manifests itself there.

Following up -

Can't explain it, but the backup from DVDFab works, from MakeMKV it does not, but *only* when using full menu playback. If I play the .mpls for main title or the m2ts for the main title, it works fine in either case.

Given that DVDFab seems to change some of the jar files, I suspect therein lies the difference.

Whereas MakeMKV makes a full 1:1 backup, Fab can do other things like strip region encoding, etc. which I do on occasion.

I use MakeMKV 99% of the time, and Fab particularly for Lionsgate titles.

YMMV.
