I am confused though, the date on the drive sticker is June 2023; did they ship drives with old firmware or is there some sort of secret flashing method...

My drive has a similar manufacture date and I was wondering the same thing.
I'd assume that they'd be flashed in the factory with the latest FW version.

However, if there is a private flashing/downgrading method out there:
It could get patched in future firmware updates if publicly released.
It could require soldering or other external hardware.

I've examined my own Pioneer drives, and of the two which were manufactured in July 2023, one has "good" firmware and the other has "bad" firmware. I also have another Pioneer drive with "good" firmware which was manufactured in June 2023.

However, I also have a Pioneer drive which I bought new from Amazon and was apparently manufactured in August 2022, but still has "bad" firmware?! It's as if some "eager beaver" had updated the firmware on a batch of unsold stock...
