Looking for an external enclosure (In europe)

Post by georgesgiralt »

Hi !
I own a BU40N which is into an external enclosure powered by an ASMT ASM105X chip. Interface is with a USB3.2 (USB-C ) connector.
Last week, the BU40 N refused to read a DVD. At first I though it was dying, as it is a 2018 made drive and had seen a lot of discs.
So I thought I could try to read a Blu-Ray in order to check. It ran fine, and I was able to see the movie entirely.
I then removed the device from the computer to open the drive to see if I could see anything on the lenses. Nothing.
So I plugged the BU40N in it's box (opened) and put the DVD into it. It ran fine. But started to make errors at mid lecture.
To make a long story short, I tried to change the USB cable, to no avail, and last, I used a Chinese USB-drive adapter instead of the external enclosure.
The BU40N perform flawlessly since then. But start to behave badly when plugged to the ASM enclosure. I've checked the USB computer port and cable (using external disks and another external DVD drive) both work fine.
So I'm left with a defective external box, as far as I can tel.
So could you recommend an empty external enclosure of very good quality to replace mine ?
Many thanks in advance for your help and advices.
P.S. : A computer seller in my town says that USB2.0 is not fast enough for Blu-Ray devices. Is it true ? Should I ask for at least an USB 3.0 enclosure ?

As a rule, I try to get the most "up-to-date" device I can, if only to insulate my set-up from becoming obsolete. But having said that, I've also plugged my USB3 drive into a USB2 port on my PC and then played an ordinary (i.e. non-UHD) BluRay movie directly from disk without issue.
