I opened up my computer and connected it via SATA, no change in results. Wanted to do that before I purchased another adapter to see if that was the problem. Any other advice? Should I try to reflash or something?

What's the date on top of the drive a 1.03 drive is probably at least 3 years old at this point so unlike to be new

The date on the sticker says 2019 01 31. I bought it off of Amazon as New, but everything about the packaging screamed Used. Thought I'd try it anyway, since I thought it met the requirements listed in the first post.

Edit: Just want to say, I'm regularly checking back, but my posts aren't showing up for hours because they need to be approved first. I'm not complaining about how the website works, just apologizing for the delay in response.

Looks like Amazon are sending out old models again. Nothing ever stops to amaze me with Amazon.

I have LG WH16NS40

I downgraded to firmware 1.02 a couple of years ago and it has worked flawlessly since to rip hundreds of discs. I tried today though, and MkMkV doesn't see that a disc has been inserted. MkMkV does still identify the drive, and the correct firmware though.
My system is also unable to read a disc there, either. The drive opens and closes, but nothing is being read. I tried re-flashing the firmware, but still nada.
Is it possible the unit has worn out? Like, the laser doesn't work anymore? Nothing has changed with my system otherwise.

Yeah happens all the time but before you throw it away fully turn it off completely power off your computer and unplug it or unplug the drive case if external.
Wait 5 min then boot back up and see if it works
If not you could also take it apart and clean it but it's probably done for and time for a new drive

It's internal. Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. It just stopped working with no system changes whatsoever. If "happens all the time" is really a thing, then this could be a candidate. I've been ripping discs almost daily with it for a couple of years.[/quote]

Is it worth $60?? You said you have ripped 100's of discs with your old drive. How much have you saved in doing so?

yeah alot of the lg and asus desktop drives die they are all the same mt1959 hardware

for me its less than 10 mins to take apart and clean if its my own drive i try it if its one im selling i just send it back because i dont trust it.

Yeah check the date make sure someone didn't send you a pre 2015 drive that you or they bricked

Yeah that should work but if it's dead then just exchange or return it personally I recommend a BU40n they sell adapters to fit it in a 5.25 bay

Do the standard troubleshooting steps before returning new sata data/power cable different port different PC different os lot's to go wrong and try ect. But it's probably just a bad one

Thanks for the advice. Can the BU40n be flashed to a firmware version without the sleep bug? And if so, is it actually a version you'd recommend or is it just better to keep the bug in mind and make sure I start the rip within 2 minutes of inserting the disc?
