Hello guys,

First, lots of thanks to @quietvoid for the amazing work on DV !!!

What's the latest on the grey letterbox issue ?

I am in a strange situation with a few recent mp4 files with Dolby Vision ( Version 1.0, dvhe.05.06, BL+RPU with DDP+ Dolby Atmos).
They play perfectly - but only once - on the LG C9 (firmware 05.10.25) internal player but if I close it of try to fast forward, the file is not recognized anymore and I can't reopen it.
If I open the same files on my M9702 (diskless Chinese OPPO UDP-203 clone), the files play perfectly but I get the grey letterbox bars you guys mention, that I have never seen before while playing DV BDMV profile 7 on the M9702.
On a X700 last firmware with the same TV, I get the grey letterbox as well.

Of course, on these devices, DV mkv's are not an option.
I remuxed to M2TS with TSMuxer but the issue stays the same. I also played around with dovi_tool but nothing gives (actually getting a pinkish image when converting to Profile .

I have never noticed this grey letterbox issue, which is very obvious on OLED- pitch black scenes, before so I am not sure whether it comes from these specific files or from the last C9 firmware upgrade. The "file not recognized" issue after opening the MP4 once on the LG C9 internal player is recent as well.

Any conversion advice would be very much appreciated and I am of course at your disposal for extensive file testing if needed to pinpoint this issue !!!

That's a great sample @quietvoid. It's very interesting to see examples of all the DV adjustments, because until now I've always been a little bit vague about exactly what the DV metadata can do.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll bother switching to the 2018 model though. I only noticed the grey bars with fades to black.

Having this exact problem with my x700, I just can't stand the grey black bars(especially the 1600px content). I even prefer my Shield with the red push for p8 cropped content(no red push with p5).

Tried it on Oppo, and yes, grey bars are there.
The interesting part is that how grey it is depends on the metadata! E.g. from the previously linked Dolby manual (thanks for thjis for you RESET and Mannix):
"... Blu-ray players ... Due to this implementation on these devices, any positive lift applied to Dolby Vision content during the “trim pass,” will raise the black levels in the letterbox/blanking areas of the image and can become distracting to the end user. Dolby recommends a maximum positive lift value of 0.025 while doing the trims on letterboxed content during the Dolby Vision content creation process."

Edit: what happens with the "min_pq" L1 metadata during madmeasure2RPU generation? Will it be always 0? (I don't think that madvr's bin file has any info about it.)

min_pq is always set to 0. This is the same behavior as the HDR10+ derived generation.

Thanks, now that's interesting. Maybe we can ask mashdi to provide this value as well in the measurement file.
What do you think what would happen if it's not 0 during tonemapping? I mean what's the effect of this value?

Does anyone compared the result this type of metadata RPU (from madvr) vs static metadata RPU (1 for all frames), if so is there any difference?

The file should be near 110 gib (BL: 100 , EL 3)
Than I create a mp4 file with ffmpeg. You should try with mp4box.

you do what you want but muxing an IMAX DV with a non-IMAX video is a bad idea because the IMAX L1/L2 metadata contains values from DV analysis that includes pixels of the IMAX area and this is something a L5 edit cannot fix.

yeah, movies and tv shows from streaming services. AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime crop all their content.

Because, I am in fact in the same boat regarding these movies...normally all gravy with C9 internal player - I find the DV presentation slightly better on it than on the M9702 in fact - with eARC to HW-Q950T..except, of course, for this effing "file not recognized" issue after one launch.

Well, I'm not sure if it can be done with profile 5 content but with HDR10 base layer DV (P8) content , yes you can add the black bars with staxrip with some basic script I'm sure you can find somewhere on doom9. still re-encoding though.

I don't have any issue on the C8/plex with DD+ atmos via ARC. But I've been watching mostly TS files and not mp4. I know mp4 is very unstable on the Shield/plex.

maybe there are better ways nowadays but I used to use mp4box

TS playback is much better than MP4 on the x700, so yes I assume it's the same with the x800m2
