Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get MakeMKV working on a Sony Vaio laptop (SVE1512W1EB) with its built-in Blu-ray drive after switching from Windows 10 to Linux. I'd appreciate any help.
System:
- Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, 64-bit (Ubuntu Noble base), kernel: [uname -r]
- CPU: Intel Core i5-3210M
- Drive: PIONEER BD-ROM BDC-TD05, revision 1.00 (internal SATA laptop drive)
- MakeMKV 2.0.0, tested both Flatpak (Flathub) and native (ppa:heyarje/makemkv-beta)
Problem:
- With a Blu-ray inserted, both the GUI and makemkvcon hang indefinitely right after the startup line. The drive doesn't even spin up. Waited 10+ minutes.
- Without a disc, "makemkvcon -r info disc:9999" finishes immediately and lists the drive correctly (DRV:0 ... /dev/sr0).
- Hung "makemkvcon guiserver" processes stay behind and block the drive until killed.
Debug output (makemkvcon --debug -r info disc:0):
DEBUG: Code 0 at ZT1Pm.L!,.E|I0:ZpGU.+S:29393631
(then nothing further)
What I've tried:
- sg module loaded (/dev/sg1 exists, user is in cdrom group, permissions OK)
- Unmounted the disc (udisksctl unmount) and disabled automount actions
- Killed all leftover makemkv processes before each test
- Set sdf_Stop = "ZT1Pm.L!,.E|I0:ZpGU.+S:29393631" in ~/.MakeMKV/settings.conf -> no change, same debug line
- Also tried SDF_STOP as environment variable -> no change
- Tried downgrading the Flatpak to 1.18.4 -> "This application version is too old"
Other observations:
- The same drive ripped Blu-rays fine with MakeMKV on Windows 10 on this very laptop.
- Under Linux the drive works otherwise: DVDs play in Celluloid, Blu-ray UDF volumes mount fine, CDs rip with fre:ac. No timeouts/resets in dmesg during the hang.
Debug log is attached. Is there anything else I can try with 2.0.0, or does this drive need a different sdf_Stop value?
Thanks a lot!
2.0.0 hangs at "Scanning CD-ROM devices" with disc inserted – Pioneer BDC-TD05 (laptop), Linux Mint 22.3
