Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION

Why am I getting this error please (see also subject line)?:

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading 'BD-ROM hp BD ROM BC-5550H 2.80 1205595E111' at offset '1048576'

I have two external disk drives, and, interestingly, only one of them throws this error. The other one doesn't. Even more interestingly, ripping seems to be proceeding normally(!), with no hiccups.
