are there any BU40N drives that are really not MT1959 platform?

Post by shisha0505 »

hi all,
i was just wondering if there are any BU40N drives (independently of which manufacturer is labelled on it) which actually are not MT1959 platform.
I'm asking because i have one from HP (which i built into an enclosure) which shows up as "not MT1959 platform" in SDF Tool flasher.
Now according to some discussions it seems not unlikely that wrong enclosures (or rather their backplate sata-usb interfaces) might be the reason why drives falsely are recognized as non MT1959.
So i took the drive out of the enclosure and connected it with a small "mini sata to USB" cable to my PC.
But sdf flash tool still recognizes the drive as non MT1959 so i am wondering if there are BU40Ns that are indeed not MT1959 platform.

Post your Makemkv info. There are indications that LG is not using the Mediatek controller anymore for new drives.

Back then you received the advice to go for another enclosure or another SATA-USB adapter including a mini SATA - SATA adapter. So you didn't follow this advice it looks like. By just waiting your situation hasn't changed. Either you accept your situation or you try to solve it. This adapter is fairly cheap and supports flashing. And you tried a mini SATA - SATA adapter. Be aware not all SATA ports support flashing as well. Especially chips like Marvell that give you additinal SATA ports. Connect to the ports that are based on the Intel chpset. I have seen issues with AMD chipsets as well. The drive should report the hardware platform when connected.

thanks and
well, actually the advice for a mini-SATA - SATA adapter was my own advice.
Eventually i decided to try another SATA-USB adapter instead of this first idea of my own. As it turned out this didn't work out as hoped and expected.
And that is actually the reason why i started this thread.
Because before i try something else i want to be sure if any BU40Ns exist that are actually physically non MT1959s.
Which i guess obviously would prevent them from getting flashed no matter which adapter i try... :?

Nobody has seen a BU40N that is not based on MT1959. The logical step is to connect it with something that surely supports flashing like the Benfei or with a SATA port that does. You have options.

thanks :-), that was the information i was looking for to be sure if the error is caused by the drive or the adapter.
so i'll stick to my initial idea of connecting the drive directly to a Sata port

Update:

...maaaan, this sucks.
I got me a "SATA III to SLIM SATA" cable and connected the drive directly to the mainboard's SATA port.
Now at least it shows up as MT1959 platform in SDFtool Flasher.exe
Then i tried to flash it with "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin" from the "The all you need firmware pack".
SDFtool Flasher definitely did something but i don't know what because in MakeMKW the drive still shows up as
Product: BDRE BU40N
Revision: BW43

Copying 3D BluRay obviously still works but still no UHD... (where's the "banging head on desk" smiley...?)

Well: nevermind.
Finaly got it to work. I used sdftool_flasher.exe and checked the enc! option. This time flashing was successful, MakeMKV shows the new Firmware and UDH backup seems to work
