Hi !
Making the decision between the XD08-EMBS and XS07TS

Is there any difference in performance/features between the two ?

- You mention the store is opening tomorrow at 9am, what time zone?
- You mention selling BDR-XS07TS as UHD friendly but isn’t it the BDR-XS07UHD / BDR-XS07TUHD models that are UHD compatible? I thought BDR-XS07TS was the non-UHD version. Will BDR-XS07UHD be in stock as well?
- It’s my understanding post 2022 production with firmware 1.2 or later blocks UHD ripping with MakeMKV, how do you ensure this works on brand new devices then, are you flashing them?
His drives are new and are flashed/cross-flashed with firmware of the UHD compatible models.

He is in Ireland so that timezone.

Performance is the same. The XS07 is a slot load. The XD08 is a clamshell and is the newer model.

I've seen a lot of people talk about the difference in reliability between clamshell/slot load but I've also seen asmcom assure us the XS07 is as reliable as it gets.

If both are equivalent in reliability and performance is there *any* reason to chose one over the other ?

Just choose whatever type you prefer.

Personally, I prefer the clamshell type and have a BDR-XD08UMB-S in my laptop bag fo the odd occasion I may need it. I have a BDR-S12UHT and a BDR-S13J-X as my usual drives connected to my desktop PC and 2 x LG drives (WH16NS60 and BH16NS55) stowed away in the cupboard.

Thanks a lot for helping a newbie like me !

Got some other unrelated question to those previous ones

Why have 2 drives connected to your desktop pc ? Do you have different drives for different purposes ?

So I can rip 2 discs at the same time.

Hi,

Thanks for your questions, no problem at all, they’re very sensible ones.

• Our store opening time is 9am UK time..

• The BDR-XS07TS we supply is fully UHD-friendly and has the same core functionality as the BDR-XS07TUHD when it comes to reading and ripping 4K UHD discs.

The main difference is that the BDR-XS07TS does not include the official AACS 2.0 playback module, so it will not support official commercial playback software.

However:

• It does support unofficial playback
• It works perfectly with MakeMKV
• It reads and rips UHD discs normally
• Functionally, for ripping/backup purposes, it behaves the same as a BDR-XS07TUHD

So for MakeMKV users, there is no disadvantage.

• Regarding firmware and post-2022 drives:

Yes, newer production drives with stock firmware are usually blocked for UHD ripping. The dates for Europe are slightly difference to the US models.

All drives we supply are fully tested and configured to be UHD-friendly before dispatch.
Every unit is checked with multiple UHD discs to ensure proper operation.

We do not ship “untested” drives.

All drives that we supply will read and work with 4K UHD discs.

If you have any other questions, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to help.

Kind regards,
Asmcom
UHD Friendly Drives Team
