I own a Pioneer BDR-211M and a 212U. They look exactly alike and are known to be hard to flash and enable libredrive and what not. It turns out that my *refurbished* 211M was FLASHED with non-Pioneer firmware and is LibreDrive enabled.

My question is:
How would the previous owner have flashed the Pioneer? They did it somehow, but I'm having trouble figuring out how one would do that.
There is no unofficial pioneer firmware only old stuff
Ok, it's one of those black Pioneers with the UHD Blu Ray logo on the front. I updated the firmware on the drive to a pre-2022 firmware after this happened, so I don't have a screenshot, but I swear I opened it in MakeMKV and it said the firmware was some crazy thing not like the 1.5x or ID58 or whatever, and it said LibreDrive status: ENABLED
old pioneer fw is LibreDrive ENABLED

For the record, I updated the firmware to a pre-2022 version by editing the version number in the current download link on the Pioneer firmware page, and after I did that, it said LibreDrive was possible, not yet enabled, and it was actually able to play/rip UHD discs in that state.

Before I updated the firmware, I swear it, the firmware said some wacky non Pioneer thing. I'm just putting it out there. You never know what's possible

I just purchased a:

Product: BD-RW BDR-XS07U
Revision: 1.03
Firmware date: 2023-01-06

It states
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8E21
Firmware version: ID05

When I try to decrypt a 4k UHD disk it isn't working. What do I need to do to get this drive to work?

Return it. Pioneer crippled the FW & so far. there is no means of undoing it.

Pioneer firmware update February 2023

edit: "Local" vendors still have access to Pioneer devices w/ older FW.

Hello! :D
I'm a new user and I've spent about 1.5hrs 'doing my homework'. From my current understanding, I think my drive should be supported, but must be added to the database.
I've attached a screenshot and included a text copy of the data to this comment.
If there is anything I need to do on my end, please let me know. Thank you very much.

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Current profile: DVD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD08U
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Firmware date: 2022-12-27
Bus encryption flags: 1B

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: Pioneer RS9331

Nope. You failed your homework! F :D

Your drive is not supported and cannot be added to the firmware database at this time. It has the post 11/2022 firmware that has crippled any current form of compatibility. This issue has been worked on for 2+ years now with no end in sight.
Cheers :D

Well shoot. Thanks for the reply though!
Ir hoped that because it was listed as "1.2" it might work. Oh well!
I still have a use for this drive and I can probably get one with a fully compatible firmware.

There should be enough publicly available AACSv1 device keys and host certificates that you won't need LibreDrive to play standard BluRays on that drive, even for those disks using bus encryption.

No, you are out of luck. That drive has the dreaded post 11/2022 firmware and flashing has been disabled by Pioneer.
Cheers :D
