Valerian UHD rip larger with v1.15.1 than with v1.14.7

Post by Carousel »

When I rip my Valerian UHD disc with MakeMKV v1.15.1, the file is 8GB larger than if I rip with v1.14.7. I watched the 1.14.7 file before. And it is all there. I have the same audio (ATMOS) and subtitle etc tracks included. Checking the files with MediaInfo, the only differences are in the video itself. See where starred *** below.

I loaded v1.14.7 on my PC again and re-ripped the movie. I got the same result; ripping with v1.14.7 gives me a smaller file. And I checked that I was using the same angles etc.

With most UHDs that I checked so far, there is pretty much no difference (less than 100 meg). But with Aquaman, the difference is a bit over 2 GB.

Is there some difference in HDR data ripping???

Are there any shortcuts to figuring out which UHDs would be different and which ones not?

I am just trying to figure out if there is a reason for this such that I should re-rip all my UHDs with v1.15.1. Thanks for any advice!

Would this be attributable to 1.15.1 saving the Dolby Vision track, which 1.14.7 did not?

Yep, that's exactly why. 1.15.1 now merges the 2 original HEVC tracks of a dolby vision title into a single track. Valerian has a full enhancement layer (FEL) in it's second track that's probably about 8 gigs. For titles that only have a minimal enhancement layer (MEL), the difference in size between mkv's made from 1.15.1 and versions prior will be much smaller. For titles don't are not in dolby vision, the difference in size should be negligible, if any.

Thanks very much for the explanation that the file size increase relates to Dolby Vision.

I had a read of this page to understand Dolby Vision: https://www.whathifi.com/advice/dolby-v ... ed-to-know

And a check of this page to see which of my UHDs have Dolby Vision: https://www.nextgenhometheater.com/dolb ... ay-movies/

I will re-rip them with v1.15.1 and enjoy watching them again!
