Re: Dolby Vision and 1.15.1

I simply can't get my shield tv (2019) to activate the Dolby Vision tag during plex playback.

Tried:

1. Making an mkv using makemkv 1.15.1
2. extract truehd+ac3 using eac3to
3. muxed into ts using tsmuxer (nightly build from 04.16.2020)

Plex shows HDR10 only when starting it

Media info shows:

try turning off the new player in your plex settings and make sure frame rate match is turned on. both options can be found on the same line under plex settings.
on app.plex.tv through my computer browser, or on the plex settings on my nvidia shield?
these will be settings on the shield in the plex app
Awesome. after enabling refresh rate and turning off new player, the stuttering stopped. Thank you. Looks like it's working. I am a little nervous that other people in this thread have noted a diminished quality in their rips (saving private ryan). I'll keep checking.

It's in the stable channel as I never got the beta to successfully install on my Pro 2019. That's what I've been using to watch all these remade backups and it's working absolutely great.

Hello. I've also not been able to play any .ts from the .mkv generated from a DV UHD disc.
I have a LG C8, tsMuxeR 11f852a. I tried on WebOS Plex app (doesn't start), Plex on the Fire TV Stick 4K (pops up Dolby Vision but no video).
Also, on the internal TV player, there is an error when trying to start: "the file cannot be recognized". :?:

Meanwhile, demo .ts files work fine, so do MP4s from dlb_mp4base.
My suspicions are either on tsMuxeR or something wrong embedded in the .mkv right at the start.

With yusecope's tool, mode 1 makes a properly working HEVC file when muxed into .TS.
Mode 2 has green/blue lines on the sides.

I had to demux straight from the UHD disc m2ts for yusecope's tool to work, otherwise there were no AUDs (like loading the mpls into MKVToolNix and extracting to raw streams afterwards).
So that makes me think there is a difference with the MakeMKV implementation that causes issues.

I've been playing with this for the last 24 hours or so and here are my observations.

1) This is very dependent on the version of tsMuxer. I tried 3 different version and the only one that worked was the one in this post:
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 815#p86634

Link to version:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q5v4-J ... sp=sharing

2) MKVs with lots of tracks will not load into tsMuxer. One MKV I have has over 60 tracks and it wouldn't load into tsMuxer. I remuxed to just the English tracks and then it loaded fine.

3) Files don't play every were. I finally got a few files to play from my ShieldTV 2019 to my LG OLED65C7P. The files would not play at all when added to a USB stick and plugged directly into the back to the TV. Files would only show as HDR when played through the plex app on the OLED65C7P.

4) If for some reason your ShieldTV isn't already set to DolbyVision ON and set to 4k @59.9 hrts, once you change those settings you may need to force quit Plex. Also, i believe someone on here suggested setting plex to auto set the refresh rate. Once I changed this picture looked much smoother.

After this long 24 hours, I'm not sure I'm ready to go back and re-rip all my files.

When I used the WebOS Plex App, the videos would only play with specific audio tracks. If i selected anything other than the TrueHD tack the files wouldn't play.

I re-ripped mine. Took about 2 days to get them all done. Have zero regrets. Yes, that's the version of tsmuxer I used. I only keep the video, 1 audio track (thd+ac3 made with eac3to), and whatever sub tracks I need (I create separate forced sub tracks as needed). This worked on all 20 of the ones I did.

That's interesting, I have been testing with the embedded AC3 only.

So I have a question, apologies if it sounds dumb. My TV only supports profile 5 DV inherently, I think, so if I make a profile 7 rip and play it using something like a sony x700, will it handle proper dual layer files?

I've been playing with this for the last 24 hours or so and here are my observations.

1) This is very dependent on the version of tsMuxer. I tried 3 different version and the only one that worked was the one in this post:

Yesterday I could check that Plex sometimes fails to autoswitch refresh rate, which implies that sometimes the movie plays at 60Hz.

I have the same problem with all my .ts file with DV made by tsmuxer.

I think tsmuxer is the problem because all my .mp4 DV files made by mp4muxer works well.

Hello all,
I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. If the new version of MKV 1.15.1 supports DV then why can't the MKV file play both DV and Atmos without all the extra work? i.e. tsmuxer and eac3to, etc.

I do not have a 4K tv yet but I did purchase the 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro earlier this year to be able to play all by 1080p movies in their default audio settings like Atmos and DTSX, which they all do. Why wouldn't DV pass through as well now that it is supported?

I just ripped 1917 4K with the Atmos track and with the DV track into an MKV file. Although I don't get the benefits of 4K, I am able to directly play the 4K MKV file (68GB file) through Plex on the Shield and Atmos turns on. Wouldn't it also turn on DV if I had a TV that supported it as well?

Thanks for your insights and help.

There's currently no software on the market which supports Dolby Vision in an MKV container.

If there was such a player then, theoretically, all of the aforementioned conversion to a TS file would not be necessary. And yes, you would be able to play Atmos and Dolby Vision from the single MakeMKV produced MKV. For now, the only want to get both is converted to a TS file and then additional audio stream muxing for Atmos.
