How much a subtitle or audio track take?

Post by AMAGON »

Did a search prior, not much info I found on my end to say the least, but just wondering how much space generally a subtitle or audio track usually take up if anyone knows.

Varies greatly with the track. Subtitle tracks are usually very small, relative to video, but "lossless" audio tracks can be as much as 10% of the overall file.

Much less, most of the time.

Just ran two tests, taking a file I just ripped.

Original, everything in it: 4,932,229KB
Remove both PGS subtitle tracks: 4,929,665KB
PGS included, lossless audio removed: 4,224,229KB

The test with audio removed the DTS-HD MA tracks, leaving just the DTS tracks. The file was episode 1 of an anime, about 25 minutes long.

You can use TSMuxer to extract the sub from the m2ts or MKVCleaver to extract it from the MKV to see how large it is. It's usually pointless to skip it cause it's so small.

I've seen DTS-HD MA tracks taking as much as 1.5 to 2GB, per language on a BluRay
