I have an LG WH14NS40 NS50. I'm still seeing some conflicting information here. Someone mentioned that you can flash the WH14NS40 1.04 stock directly to WH16NS60 1.02. Can anyone else confirm this? Does the WH16NS60 1.02 firmware have the same performance as the WH16NS60 1.00 firmware?
Yes
Thanks. Flashing went without a hitch!

I haven’t seen many people anywhere mention this but. I used your guide. However, I cross flashed a LG WH16NS40 1.04 to an LG WH16NS60 1.0.

Worked like a charm. Thanks to your guide. I ripped a couple 4K no problem.

I’m not a seasoned member like some of the people on this board. However if there is some glaring reason as to why I shouldn’t be doing this particular cross flash please do enlighten me.

Cheers

Did you follow the steps here or just go directly to WH16NS60 1.0 on your WH16NS40?

I have the same question for my WH16NS40 1.04 drive.

Sorry for the delay been a tad under the weather. Yes I followed this guide. I went from LG WH16NS40 1.04 to the Asus MK 3.1 reboot then from ASUS to LG WH16NS60 1.0.

Still going strong and no problems.

no need for the extra steps just go 1.04 to WH16NS60 1.02mk less steps less chance of error.

Thanks for the insight Billycar11. I’ll keep that in mind if I need to flash another one. I guess the WH16NS60 has some extra features in 1.02 over 1.0 to boot. Either way I’m pleased and thankful for this community and the support.

Jethro,

Thank you so much for this post. I found it after reading very intensively on this forum over the last few days. You mentioned your LG WH14NS40 came with firmware v1.03 - is yours the one with the SVC 50 suffix that others keep citing? If so, it sounds like I need to follow your method to flash mine (same model, but not the SVC50). If you're not sure, one way to find it is to open up MakeMKV, look under the LibreDrive section to the right under Drive Platform (see image: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/download/file.php?id=2348, source thread: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=21104). Could you let me know if yours says MT1959 or MT1939?

If yours is MT1939 (same as mine), then I can take the plunge more confidently without worrying about bricking it. I see others with the WH14NS40 that are successful, but have MT1959. Only information I found on both the model number and MT1939 is this post (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21045&p=77833&hilit=MT1939#p77833) stating to leave it alone and this post (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=18856&p=79712#p79712) stating it's not currently supported).

Could you please let me know if yours is the same MT number as mine? Thanks!

Also, thanks to all Mike admin, Marty, and Blackened for doing an impeccable job of developing this tool and spreading the knowledge. I really appreciate what you've done to help us reclaim control of our own media we purchased - it's great to be treated like legal owners instead of being treated like scum for paying for my own media.
Sorry for the delay shidairyproduct, I've been out of town with family.

My LG WH14NS40 shipped with firmware 1.04 but the process is the same for v 1.03, and you are correct, the hardware must be SVC NS50 which is the platform MT1959. The SVC NS40 will not work, I'm not sure what platform it relates to since I don't have one and I haven't searched the forums. You can also flash directly to WH16NS60 v 1.02 as Billycar11 has mentioned and bypass the Asus firmware.

Fantastic thread. I picked up an LG WH16NS40 1.04 with the Vantec enclosure and "downgraded" to LG 16NS60 1.00 with no issues. No issues with any UHD Blurays so far. Thanks all!

No problem at all, Jethro. I figured as much, thanks for confirming. I'm glad it's working for you - I'll just continue to wait for LibreDrive for my drive. It still works so I'm still good to go. Thanks for the reply!

I believe it is because you went from an LG 16 to 16

I tried to direct flash my 14 - LG WH14NS40 1.04 directly to firmware 1.0 and got an error on both drives.

The only way I could get to firmware 1.0 was cross flash to Asus 3.10 first.

I'm not sure why I ran into this issue, but it occurred on both of my LG WH14NS40 1.04.

I choose firmware 1.0 over 1.02, because it was my understanding from MartyMcNuts that it is fast and no sleep bug, and I only use MakeMKV.

Note- If you use AnyDVD, you will need firmware 1.02.

Glad it worked for you. Although, I'd suggest you use this same method to flash WH16NS60 1.00 or WH16NS40(NS50) 1.02.

The reasons I am suggesting either of these are:

1. The WH16NS60 1.00 is compatible with UHD discs and MakeMKV. It reads fast and there is no sleep bug.
2. The WH16NS40(NS50) 1.02 is also reasonably fast and is UHD friendly for MakeMKV and AnyDVD.

Apparently, there are writing (burning) issues when a WH16NS60 is cross-flashed to ASUS firmware. If you want to be able to burn BD's using your WH16NS60 then you really should stick with LG firmware. If you don't want to burn any media on your WH16NS60, then you can ignore this.

I just wanted you to know. This way you can make an informed decision.

Cheers!

I have a LG WH14NS40 with 1.03 firmware. How does this procedure in this post change for 1.03 instead of 1.04?

What is the simplest way to make this drive a Libredrive?

Thanks.

Don't do this procedure. I told you what to do already flash directly to WH16NS60 1.02MK no need for these extra steps anymore

Okay, thanks, I had posted that prior to seeing your response. I will use flashing tool by Blackened2687, and flash WH16NS60 1.02 firmware.

Hi all, I'm new (obvious, right?)
So, I just picked up my LG WH14NS40 with (of course) 1.04.

I'd like to have an un-crippled blue ray writer/reader and of course 1.04 won't cut it. Was trying to go back to WH14NS40 1.02
but it doesn't allow me to do it (Write DRAM NG message) so I'm assuming I need to cross flash to Asus first then down to
1.02. However, I'm seeing where it is recommended that I can successfully go from WH14NS40 1.04 straight to WH16NS60 1.02 with
no problems?

What are the benefits of going to WH16NS60 1.02 exactly? Any downsides? Does this take all restrictions of and make it
a libredrive?

Thanks all, appreciate all the work you do. There is such an abundance of info here easy to get overwhelmed.
