"Making Shadows" does not rip

Post by alansh »

I have one DVD, "Making Shadows", which plays fine on my PC.

But Make MKV won't back it up. It sees the titles, but when I ask it to start, it shows an output size of just 3.2K and sits there reading the disk.

I have tried various versions of MakeMKV, including the latest. I've also tried it in 2 different PCs (both running the latest Windows 10).

Other disks work fine and there is plenty of disk space.
Using direct disc access mode
Title #2 was added (17 cell(s), 2:55:51)
Title #3 was added (4 cell(s), 0:42:33)
Title #4 was added (4 cell(s), 0:42:50)
Title #5 was added (5 cell(s), 0:45:21)
Title #6 was added (4 cell(s), 0:45:07)
Title #7 has length of 10 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #8 has length of 7 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Operation successfully completed
Saving 4 titles into directory G:/Video/CHASING_SHADOWS
Any clues? What other information would you need?

I changed the subject of your message because you're not using the Bluray "backup" function.

It would be helpful to know what KIND of disk you're trying to rip, and to see the debug log (link in my signature explains how to turn it on) for the attempt.

Thanks.

The disk is a DVD from ITV. It's called "Chasing Shadows.

I've turned debug on and tried it.

I think the error is "001002:0020 LIBMKV_TRACE: Exception: Error while reading input" - but I don't know why. MakeMKV just sits there and never times out. I always have to manually abort it - even after several minutes of leaving it, hoping something will happen.

As I said, it plays OK.

cheers

I''ve sent the files to the support email.

Is it possible that the disk is corrupted but will still play?

OK- I manually copied the contents of the video_TS folder on the DVD to a folder on my hard disk. Then started up MakeMKV and pointed it there.

It started OK - seemed to work but then, for each title, sat there at "Output size" of 3.2K for about 60 seconds then started writing.
Program reads data faster than it can write to disk, consider upgrading your hard drive if you see many of these messages.
Track #3 turned out to be empty and was removed from output file

4 titles saved
And it seemed to have saved the files.

So, I'm going to try again directly from the DVD but this time leave it for an hour or so and see if it does anything.

And, it worked.

So I guess I was too impatient. But it took ages to start off.
