Re: Forced update to 1.6 now not working
1.6.1 fixed the problem for me. Also this version works without running it as root.

The update fixed it for me too. I'm on my way to buy a key now!

Re: Forced update to 1.6 now not working
It would be slightly easier for Gentoo users if you would bump the oss version number too even if the contents don't change. If the version numbers are consistent we just copy our installation file, create a digest and then install:
# cp makemkv-1.5.8.ebuild makemkv-1.6.1.ebuild
# ebuild makemkv-1.6.1.ebuild digest
# emerge makemkv
But since the oss version number wasn't bumped, the digest step failed because it couldn't download .../makemkv_v1.6.0_oss.tar.gz. I had to then figure out the problem and hard code "1.6.0" into the installation file in two places. So then next version change will require that I go back and edit the copied file once again to either get rid of or change the hard coded "1.6.0" (unless, of course, that file stays the same).
# cp makemkv-1.5.8.ebuild makemkv-1.6.1.ebuild
# ebuild makemkv-1.6.1.ebuild digest
# emerge makemkv

Thank you, I see I was not alone!
