HD-DVD Subtitles?

Post by cozzmo »

I've got over 10 movies successfully done now, but none of the subtitles work on any of the movies. I have selected all english subtitle tracks for most of them, and none of them work. I assumed that one would often be forced track and the other would be full subs. I use VLC to play it back none of the subtitle tracks work at all no matter which is selected. Anyone else got this issue?

Do the subtitles work if split out and converted to SUBs using MKVcleaver and BDSup2Sub? Just wondering if MakeMKV is corrupting the PGS stream. (Is the PGS stream showing up in MediaInfo?)

Can you post the media info text for one that has subs that don't work?

Ohhhh, that can't be good. MakeMKV 1.60 is outputting the subs as VOB subs?!?!?! HD DVD's use PGS subs just like BD's!! I just tested one of the movies I made yesterday...it has vob subs and I can't get them to work, either. That seems...bad.

OK so at least that identifies a problem that can be fixed right ? :?:

Yup. For some reason MakeMKV is putting them in as VOB subs. Seems like a bug. I don't know if maybe it's misidentifying them in the header or not. (Or if that's even possible). I guess I could try taking a look at the header editor in MMG and see if they can be fixed.

EDIT: Well that successfully broke my MKV. I guess someone else who's better with the header editor than me can try it. But this is a bug that MakeMKV needs to fix.

All part of the development process. Hopefully its an easy fix. Just means they'll need to be ripped again.

Yup. Along with the other problems with titles like The Matrix and Top Gun. Hopefully this can all be fixed cause I really badly wanna get my HD DVD collection converted to MKV's to back them up properly. TMT is really the last great player for HD DVD's and I suspect that it's going to get dropped at some point. So having them converted to MKV would be good. Besides, we can bitstream MKV's. :D

That's not true. HD-DVDs always use VOBSUB, either 2-bit (4 color) as DVD or extended 8-bit (256 colors). I guess not too many programs can read them.

So does that mean that they are properly transferred (and i don't need to re-rip the discs) but i'll either need to convert them to another format and remux or use a specific player that can properly read them?

I wasn't aware of this. I guess I'm going to need to look into this situation more. Personally I'll probably convert them. I have a rip I did of Top Gun a while back and it's using PGS subs that work fine. It's possible my tool that I used converted them. I honestly don't know.

This is what I've read too. However, I can't find any tools that will understand them (VLC, MPC, BDSup2Sub, etc.). Anyone know of anything?
