MakeMKV BETA popup - Application failed to initialize

prior to today, the MKV program was running great.
running version: 1.14.3 (windows)
got home, got new movie in mail. went to add it to video library and "MakeMKV BETA popup - Application failed to initialize" in center of screen
ok, something corrupt/crashed/etc...uninstalled program. rebooted, reinstalled latest version 1.14.3
check box "run MakeMKV" same exact error pops up in center of screen - no reasons given

is there a command line i need to run locally now? or edit a config file? (and where is config file located?)

system:
windows 10 home
32gb ram
gtx 1080ti

MKV is registered

resolved - not sure how , but windows 10 turned on "controlled folder access" option under windows defender and this prevented MKV from initializing
looking within this area I see no actual options referring to anything related to MKV but when its on, mkv fails.

Most likely your system did an update since the last time you used MakeMKV - this issue has been popping up sporadically since October, and more frequently since Microsoft started pushing the October Surprise update again in December.
