WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
I have a WH14NS40 that I thought was too old to be a NS50 model, but after opening up my case and checking the label, sure enough, it's a 50. So I plan to flash LibreDrive support onto it, but I noticed multiple versions of that drive's firmware have been posted here recently.
Billycar11's pack with the patched flash utility includes a 1.02 firmware per this post:
https://www.2mkv.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 858#p70284
But then Mike's more recent master firmware collection has a 1.03 file:
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 113#p71880
Should I go with the 1.03 version? I had thought the point was to revert to 1.02, before LG locked out the UHD capabilities, but maybe I'm missing something. Can someone explain what the difference is between the two files?
As a follow-up question, I really only want LibreDrive support to disable the "SilentPlay" speed lock on this drive, so I can rip my 1080p discs at full speed (I don't plan to rip any 4k discs anytime soon). My understanding from looking around the forums is that speed limitations haven't been addressed in any of the LD firmwares yet. Is that accurate? And if so, is there any other benefit for me to do the flash right now, other than the UHD read capabilities? Or should I just wait till a version is available that takes off the speed lock?

Re: WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
I would go with 1.00 from the WH16NS60 you get rid of the sleep bug it rips faster and it works with other programs that support the ns60

I didn't realize you could flash a firmware from a different drive. Are there any risks to that?
Is there a list of firmwares that shows which drives they work with and what features they support? This is getting more confusing.

All of these drives can be crossflashed to each other its the same risk as flashing an older version of the same drives firmware the drives all basically just different revisions of the same thing all have the same controller mt 1959

@floog, I agree with Billy. WH16NS60 1.00 is great for speed and no sleep bug, however, if you do want to stick with the same model firmware, I'd use 1.02 as I don't think 1.03 is UHD friendly.
Cheers

Well, Mike's MK 1.03 is if you wanted to stick with 1.03 for whatever reason. As others have said, it's just a matter of picking which firmware you want to run with and go for it.
Re: WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
Thanks for the info everyone, that makes more sense. Do the WH14 and WH16 use the same drive motor? There's no risk of damage there by using the 16's firmware on the 14 and pushing the speed too far, right?MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 12:33 am@floog, I agree with Billy. Actually, how does the higher speed work in that scenario? Is the firmware disabling SilentPlay, or just telling the drive that it's a 16x drive instead of a 14, or both/something else?
Sorry for the 20 questions, I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into before I start modding the drive.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I can also flash Mike's modified firmware for the WH16NS60 onto my BW-16D1HT and it will disable riplock and fix the sleep bug?Billycar11 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 11:30 pmAll of these drives can be crossflashed to each other its the same risk as flashing an older version of the same drives firmware the drives all basically just different revisions of the same thing all have the same controller mt 1959

blurays rip at a max of 8x with any firmware dont know if they use the same motor, dont think it will damage it both have a max speed of 48x for other media so wont hurt the motor and it it cant read disk at that speed it will just drop down its speedfloog wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 1:03 amThanks for the info everyone, that makes more sense. the higher speed is just better firmware optimization the 40 on the same disk takes like 53 mins on ns60 fw it take 45 it picks up speed faster and reaches a higher peak

@babypuncher,
For your BW-16D1HT, you may as well use Mike's 3.10-MK as apparently the sleep bug is fixed and it is just as quick as the WH16NS60 1.00 firmware.

Re: WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
Finally have some spare time this afternoon to flash my WH14NS40, and I see the 16NS60 firmware in Mike's pack is labeled 1.01, although most of you said to use 1.00 which I see in Billy's older pack.
Can I use the 1.01 or does it have to be 1.00, and what's the difference? Is there an index somewhere that details what the difference is between all these different firmwares in terms of enabled features and bug fixes?

both 1.01 and 1.00 will have no sleep bug, but mk 1.01 will only work with makemkv for ripping so if you only use makemkv it will be finefloog wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2019 7:36 pmFinally have some spare time this afternoon to flash my WH14NS40, and I see the 16NS60 firmware in Mike's pack is labeled 1.01, although most of you said to use 1.00 which I see in Billy's older pack.

Re: WH14NS40: Firmware 1.02 or 1.03 preferred for LD?
I don't think that's right. I've been using *ahem* other software here & there as needed. (Don't worry, MakeMKV is my first love.) All the drives not only have MK firmware but are cross-flashed as desired. At least, I'm pretty sure I picked the MK versions of the FW. :)
