Big thanks to Alex (jonghotti) for sending me a flashed Asus drive to Australia (Brisbane). Works well and is a heck of a lot faster than my old Asus BR drive for ripping.

I'm still messing around with UHD content as a beginner; my projector is 1080p, my oppo UDP-203 can play UHD (disc or network) and I'm pretty certain my Marantz AV8801 pre-pro passes 4k imaging just fine. My Popcorn hour A400 doesn't present the image though when I rip the UHD version of a movie with MakeMKV.

I'll have to stick with the BR versions for now but I have the capability I wanted now for when I get a 4k display (deciding on a replacement projector or getting an 80" + TV given the image fidelity of new displays.

Just an FYI. Had planned on downgrading some drives myself. But for me it was just easier to source from the regular sellers here on the forum. Both techman21 and jonghotti were solid for me. Had an ASUS BW-16D1HT I had purchased myslef that techman21 downgraded for me to 3.01. He was prompt, responded to all questions. Drive has worked great so far. Alex (jonghotti) was cool as well. He hooked me up with an LG UH12NS40 (a more budget option) crossed flashed to ASUS. Also a LG WH16NS40. Both have been good thus far.

My motherboard doesn't have IDE, so I may need a flash service. Any ideas for a flash service or a way to force IDE on a motherboard that doesn't support it?

well there could be a way to enable ide mode on your motherboard if it is pre skylake but that would require bios modding and we are not getting in to that here not sure about amd stuff and it not worth it for a bluray drive. i flash drives for people checkout my thread here: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=17831 just make sure your drive is 2015+ and came with firmware 3.00+

Depends on what country you are in. If in USA then go with what Billycar11 said. If you are on the other side of the world, then the LG BH16NS55 is a very popular drive, and what I use personally.

Also, just in case you didn't know and if it matters to you or not, the ASUS BC-12D2HT is not a Blu-ray writer. It is a Bu-ray reader and a DVD/CD writer.
Cheers :D
