A million ways to die in the west - "can't decrypt"

I just tried to do a full backup of a brand new copy of the film A Million Ways to Die in the West. I put the disc in and click on Backup, tick decrypt and start the process and a few seconds later it fails, the main error that stands out to me being "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted". Does that mean the disc is yet to work with MakeMKV? It's not my drive I don't think, as I just finished making backups of three other brand new Blu Ray discs I just bought and they all backed up fine.

I did notice in the FAQs there's an email address I can send logs and various files to in instances where the app can't read a disc, should I do that in this case?

Yes, it would be a good idea to send the logs and information files to support@makemkv.com, just in case, but...

This disk uses AACS version 47, which is rather old, and should be understood by any recent version of MakeMKV. Check that it is clean, especially near the hub, where the information needed to generate the key is stored. It looks like there were some issues reading that, which lead to the key failures.

Well, this is embarrassing. So the disc is new, and it looks clean, like a mirror! I couldn't see any scratches or marks no matter what way I looked at it under the light. But when you said it uses an old AACS I straight away thought then in that case it must either be the disc or the drive just doesn't like this particular disc. But I figured despite the disc looking pristine, it probably wouldn't hurt to give it a damn good wiping with a microfibre cloth I had lying around. So I did, breathed on it a few times too (I mean normally I'd probably use some lens cleaner or something if a disc is really dirty but I'm not above using the moisture in my breath as a substitute). If anything wiping it made it look less clean than before, probably because of my breath. Anyway after wiping it, I popped it in again with fingers crossed and wouldn't you know it the damn thing worked. MakeMKV made a backup without complaints.

I'm a bit confused really how a clean disc that had nothing, not even so much as a bit of dust, on the surface could have issues, and then I go and breath on it and wipe it a few times with a not so clean cloth and likely make it dirtier than it was, and it starts working. Normally, my first port of call is always to clean a disc if I get errors when doing things like this but I was completely thrown off the right track by both the disc being completely clean (apparently) and the fact MakeMKV was telling me about the Volume key being unknown.

Anyway sorry for wasting your time, but thanks for the help at any rate.

If you read through the "If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!" topic at the top of the Blu-ray discs forum, there is a picture of what you probably experienced... a film of chemicals used during the packaging process. I haven't been able to get a good picture of it on a disk, because the camera won't focus on it, but the packaging still shows it.

The longer a disk sits in the warehouse, the worse it can get.

Ah I see. I did look at that thread initially but didn't read further down in the replies. When I breathed on the disc and looked at it I did briefly see a weird pattern on the that wasn't visible under the light without the moisture on it, so it must indeed have been coated with the chemicals you mention. In all the years I've been fiddling around with disc based media never encountered this before! Oh well, you live and learn. Thanks
