Oh ok thanks alot! Is there a way to know which to pick? Is the english one the first one usually? Or is ripping all 2-3 to see which is the english one?

On every disk I've seen so far, English is the first one listed. On Bluray, it will have "800" in its playlist name.

So does this not work anymore? I have the latest Java on my Mac. MakeMKV never gives any indication for main feature.

I have JRE installed on my Mac but I do not think it is working with MakeMKV. I do not see the FPL listed movie anymore. Any ideas what I need to check / reinstall?

Remember from the first message:
If the JRE is set up properly, AND you insert a Blu-Ray disk with "fake playlist protection" (i.e., something sold by Lionsgate), the log window will show a message similar to:
Using Java runtime from C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_121\bin\java.exe
(this will not appear for non-BD disks or BDs that do not have "fake playlist" detected)
If you aren't ripping a Lionsgate title, MakeMKV doesn't care about the Java runtime, so there won't be any messages.

But, if you know it's a Lionsgate disk, it should complain about the JRE not being where it expects it to be.

Can I just please ask, as of March 2020, the best way to (try to) deal with this playlist obfuscation thing for non Lionsgate stuff, in this case a bluray PBS series. Thanks.

Any thoughts on whether I should try this Java Runtime thing for a PBS series bluray (Unforgotten, 400+ playlists) or the PowerDVD method or something else please ?

It seems that this doesn't work on Linux. It says it uses openjdk on my computer, but never shows the FPL. I had to do it in windows. Minor, but wonder if this needs official Oracle Java.

Others have pointed out that OpenJava doesn't work for this, in other topics.

I would like to revisit this, but not for Lionsgate titles. I have been ripping a lot of blu-rays lately and there are a lot of movies that are like this one that I am posting a screenshot of.

It will show "Cooley High" - 10 Chapters , 21.2 GB then has 3 segments (segment map 2,3,2 in this case).

Then it will have another file with a slightly different runtime: 1:47:35 vs 1:47:13

These are obviously the same movie . Does it really matter which one I select? I ran the blu-ray disc through DVDFab Player 6 which tells you the main title and it is saying the one without chapters is the correct one. Would I be wrong to choose one over the other? I wonder if one is the Canada version of the film and one is the USA version, which would be the same movie but with slight ending or opening credits?

I just want to make sure that I always select the correct file. Is there any way to do this? I have MakeMKV directed towards the JAVA.exe file but it doesn't work on these type of movies. Any thoughts?

Any help would be appreciated - Screenshots posted in the attachments. Thank you!

Notice the Source File Names; the one with chapters is a mpls (play list), while the one without them is an m2ts (raw transport stream). Yes, they are the "same movie", but the play list determines which parts of the transport stream are used, and includes the chapter list.

Which one is the correct one to choose? Thanks so much

Go with the mpls unless there is some reason to use the raw m2ts.

Reasons to NOT go that way is something like how GKIDS disks are often mastered - the TS has English and Japanese audio tracks, but the play lists only specify English OR Japanese.

Even then, it is sometimes easier to simply stick with the play lists, and merge the two files later with mkvmerge.

Thanks so much! I was just making sure there are no differences in quality between the two file types. I am just playing the files on Kodi and Plex apps and want the best quality possible to the orginal blu ray disc.

@Woodstock does it matter which file I choose in this situation. The file sizes are the exact same, as well as the movie's runtime, chapters, and segments. They are both .mpls as well.

Thanks for any insight. I want to make sure I select the right file every time so I do not have to do it again. Do you have a rule of thumb?

Please see my attached screenshot for this specific disc.

I have also heard I can use something like DVDfab Player which shows the "main title" for each movie, but sometimes when I use that it plays the main file with a commentary track so I'm not even sure if it is the main title. I have also heard you can use AnyDVDHD and it will show the correct file to choose every time, but it doesn't show it most of the time in the "info" . What's the true way to figure out which file to select every time? This is driving me nuts and I don't want to re-rip movies later on.
