Hi,
I just noticed that when ripping the movie "Searching", the three english subtitle tracks are completely broken in the generated MKV. The MKV plays fine but the subs don't show.
If I exctract the subs from the MKV and try to open them in f e SubtitleEdit, it says they are corrupt.
The subtitles show in the original movie just fine and if I rip the subs with TsMuxer, they also work.
I'm hoping this is limited to only this movie as I still have a boatload of MKVs that's been ripped with MakeMKV that I have yet to watch. :'(
Searching (2018) subtitles broken in generated MKV
Re: Searching (2018) subtitles broken in generated MKV
Extracted with tool xxxxx ? mkvxtract from MkvToolNIX?
SutitleEdit is a OCR conversion tool, not sure what happens with HDMV/PGS subtitles. As far as I know it cannot show the graphics, it try's to convert them to text. Better use the "BDSup2Sub" Java tool.
Msssing subtitles can also be a problem with the playing software. I have a "Dune HD" MediaPlayer and always missed some subs during viewing, but after an software update all subs are there.
Good Luck

Yes, extracted them from the MKV with MKVToolNix and Subtitle Edit will show PGS-subs without a problem.
Playing software is MPC HD, VLC and Kodi so pretty sure that's not where the problem is.

Re: Searching (2018) subtitles broken in generated MKV
I can assure you that MakeMKV is not having issues with either DVD/VOBSUB or BD/PGS subtitles - at least, not if the tracks themselves are fine. Much of what I rip is subtitle-only, and the rest I rip both English and original language tracks, so the subtitles are important.
What are you using for playback? VLC, while not the best player anymore, at least has full compatibility with just about every subtitle type out there, and makes a good test for MKV files. It will also allow you to identify audio and subtitle tracks for later processing.
It could be as simple as your player is actually respecting the default flag, and no track is marked as default.

Re: Searching (2018) subtitles broken in generated MKV
Like I said, the subs don't show in VLC, MPC HD or Kodi. They are listed and you can select them but nothing is shown.
And if extracted from the MKV, they are corrupt according to Subtitle Edit (Blu-ray sup file does not contain any subtitles or contains errors - try demuxing again) while the subs ripped from the same source with TsMuxer work with all software above.
Attaching a pic with the sub-files extracted from the MakeMKV generated MKV (the first three in the pic )and also the same files extracted with TsMuxer (the last three). You can cleary see that the file sizes are completely different.

Only for clarification, the first three with mkvextract from the mkv file and the other three with TXMuxer from the mkv file or from the disc ..or ...?
Good Luck

The first three are from the MKV made by MakeMKV, the last three are from the disc with TsMuxer.

MakeMKV has detected the subs, but the entries are incomplete, at least the graphic images are not included, but I think also some other stuff.

I sent an e-mail about two weeks ago but have not heard back yet. Hopefully soon.
