UHD drives
Re: UHD drives
I’m available to flash drives that have gotten buggered up like this. Happy to do it for free if you can foot the bill for postage.
I’m curious to see a drive in this state.
This is not an offer, however,
to flash drives with unfriendly firmware recently purchased from a vendor other than myself.

Re: UHD drives
Apparently I don't have permission to reply to PMs. I guess because I'm newly registered? Anyways I flashed 3.00 and rebooted and was able to read a UHD disc. I flashed 3.02 and rebooted and was able to still read the disc. Today I am no longer able to read the disc. I flashed back to 3.00 again and no change this time.jonghotti wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 1:40 amI’m available to flash drives that have gotten buggered up like this. Re: UHD drives
I would have flashed to 3.01 to start but that’s just a personal preference.
I’ve never heard of a flash not taking like that. Did you actually rip the disc after going to 3.02 or just pop a disc in and make sure it was recognized?
That’s the only thing I can think of.
I would go back to your orginal dump and mix that with clean 3.01 and flash that. Then when the flasher says done writing close the app, let the drive reboot then run the flasher again and make sure it’s reporting 3.01
As a rule I do not trust 3.02. It’s been proven that there are multiple builds out there with the same version number yet capable of either rendering your drive friendly or very unfriendly.
For that reason I’d stick with 3.01.

Re: UHD drives
I've seen this drive mentioned in this thread, but its not clear to me if it "should" work..
I have the GGW-H20L drive.. unsure which firmware (dont think i ever updated it).. Does anyone else have this and know if it works.. when i put a disc in with makemkv it just sits there "scanning cd rom devices".

Re: UHD drives
@markm75,
I'm pretty sure that drive won't work. I have one of them sitting on a shelf. I think it is from around 2010-2011. For UHD Friendliness, you need a drive from late 2015+

Re: UHD drives
Ladies and gents, I just bought a drive from jonghotti (Alex) and he got it to me in a couple of days. It works perfectly, as advertised. Alex is a stand up guy and when he makes an offer like this, I wouldn't hesitate to take him up on it.jonghotti wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 1:40 amI’m available to flash drives that have gotten buggered up like this. Re: UHD drives
And to be clear, not just any drive 2015+. The list discussed in detail in this thread and several other places online exist for specific reasons. The drives need to meet these specific requirements to be able to read UHD BD discs/layers. Not all do.

Thanks Bill, it was my pleasure.

Re: UHD drives
Hmmm.......I ordered the Asus drive discussed in this thread. I put in my system along with the LG that stopped working despite never touching the firmware. I have the same issue with that Asus: "no disc inserted in drive". Something else is going on here. Both drives work flawlessly with anything BUT a UHD. I can put a regular Blyu-Ray in either and they are great. These are BOTH supposed to be UHD Friendly drives:st4evr wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 8:44 pmA few people reporting this issue had to re-flash UHD Friendly firmware (the same version or one of the other versions) onto the same drive to "kick it" back into working.KaraokeAmerica wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:44 pmI think this is related to topic because it specifically involves drive capability.
I have an LG-WH14NS40 with the following info as per MakeMKV:
Drive Information
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH14NS40
Revision: 1.01
Serial number: K92E3OJ4053
Firmware date: 2113-04-04 23:25
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 61
I have ripped UHD in this drive in the past. However, it suddenly stopped even recognizing UHD disks recently. It still works fine for DVD/Blu-Ray, but if I put in a UHD it simply slow flashes for a minute or so and never recognizes it. It's not just MakeMKV though. AnyDVD doesn't see the disk either and never even tries to scan it.
I have tried 3-4 different disks that will mount in a non-friendly drive right next to it in the same system or a different one, but of course I can't rip the disks in those drives.
Any ideas what could cause this? I have never updated firmware on this drive and like I said, it was working.
Thanks for any help!
This post will provide you with some options on how to do this:

ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.03
HL-DT-ST BD-REWH14NS40 1.01
I do keep my Win10 system up to date with patches. Is it possible somehow that Microsoft disabled this capability?

Re: UHD drives
In addition, no. Windows does not have anything to do with this. Skipping to the end of the thread does you no good. The very specific requirements to support UHD BDs have been discussed literally hundreds of times in this thread and in many other posts in this forum. And why brand new drives recently purchased straight from retailers will no longer work out-of-the-box.KaraokeAmerica wrote: ↑Tue Dec 18, 2018 10:29 pmI do keep my Win10 system up to date with patches. And you have yet to clarify how old that WH14NS40 is. As Billy mentioned, if it's too old it will not work. It's one of the requirements.
