Thanks for the advice. I guess the low down is grab a drive now and look for a means of downgrading fw if required. Maybe my parents old PC will do.
Worst case I'll buy a $50 piece of crap PC off gumtree and then on-sell it after I'm done
No you're not gumming anything, I've got you covered
Do you still sell pre-done drives?
Also do you ship to the UK?
I bought an LG BH16NS40 off eBay, but it's not got the SVC code 50 so it looks like I'm out of luck. I've only got a handful of 4k films but MakeMKV can't open any of them.
I pm'd you with my email address which is alexcoluzzi32@gmail.com I've plenty of quality drives in stock that I can ship and even MORE that I can't ship because the program doesn't support them yet. Please email me, buy a drive, save a dolphin!
I just bought an ASUS BC-12D2HT with firmware revision 3.01. My understanding is that 3.0 and 3.01 should work fine. I am, however, unable to open any 4k UHD discs. MakeMkv reports "no disc inserted". I'm using MakeMKV v1.14.1 linux(x64-release)
Here are the details as reported by MakeMKV.
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BC-12D2HT
Revision: 3.01
Serial number: XXX
Firmware date: 2117-11-15 19:26:
Bus encryption flags: 1E
Highest AACS version: 47

Thank you for the clarification. I mistakenly thought that the firmware version compatibility of the BC-12D2HT was the same as the BW-16D1HT. I also have a BW-16D1HT but since it came with firmware 3.0.3 I thought I'd try a different model from another vendor in hopes that it would come with older firmware since the firmware downgrade process is so involved.
So, my current situation is that I have 1 BC-12D2HT and 1 BW-16D1HT, both having incompatible firmware. Is the firmware downgrade process the same for both drives? Which drive would be worth the effort of the downgrade? I am still within the return window on both of them, so any advice is appreciated.
I also have an older LG WH16NS40 Rom Ver 1.02 from 2015 with SVC code NS40, but from what I've read, the NS40 just cannot handle UHD.
Thank you again for clarification, advice and assistance.

The same flashing method can be used for both, but as previously noted one drive may require version 3.00 if it's firmware (BC-12D2HT) as opposed to the other drive which could work with a clean version of 3.02 of it's firmware. You'll have to find the appropriate firmware files for each. They have been discussed and posted throughout this forum.
I think this is related to topic because it specifically involves drive capability.
I have an LG-WH14NS40 with the following info as per MakeMKV:
Drive Information
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH14NS40
Revision: 1.01
Serial number: K92E3OJ4053
Firmware date: 2113-04-04 23:25
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 61
I have ripped UHD in this drive in the past. However, it suddenly stopped even recognizing UHD disks recently. It still works fine for DVD/Blu-Ray, but if I put in a UHD it simply slow flashes for a minute or so and never recognizes it. It's not just MakeMKV though. AnyDVD doesn't see the disk either and never even tries to scan it.
I have tried 3-4 different disks that will mount in a non-friendly drive right next to it in the same system or a different one, but of course I can't rip the disks in those drives.
Any ideas what could cause this? I have never updated firmware on this drive and like I said, it was working.

I am experiencing every symptom you describe down to the smallest detail. The only difference is my WH16NS40 is cross-flashed to an ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.02 (clean firmware). I have used it to rip for almost a year without issue and it has stopped working in the last week. Windows no longer shows the disc label in My Computer and neither MakeMKV or AnyDVD see the disc. MakeMKV reports "no disc". I have opened and closed the drive endlessly and rebooted more than I can count. It still reads CD, DVD, and BD just fine. It is only UHD. Are you by chance using Windows 10? Based on the similar timing of our symptoms I can't help but wonder if Microsoft did something in a Windows update.

A few people reporting this issue had to re-flash UHD Friendly firmware (the same version or one of the other versions) onto the same drive to "kick it" back into working.
This post will provide you with some options on how to do this:
