This has already been discussed in multiple posts. For example, see here:

http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic ... S60#p60792

Specifically at the post from "mike admin" who is the owner/developer of MakeMKV. That drive with its stock firmware is currently NOT supported for UHD ripping/decrypting by MakeMKV. Once it's supported, Mike will advise/announce. For immediate support with that drive at this time you need to use different software.

EDIT: Or you can try crossflashing it to make it UHD Friendly drive instead:

And speaking of multiple posts, you can always return it, and buy a drive that just works. I think the link is in my signature.

No, the ASUS BW-16D1X-U is not capable of doing UHD. It's even mentioned on the first page or so of this topic as not being capable, because I tried it.

Thanks for the information, but I still don`t get it why this drive won`t read any uhd disc even in windows (not only in MakeMKV software), because BU40N suppose to be an UHD Bluray Drive.

Then that may be a more localized hardware/software problem OUTSIDE of MakeMKV on your end. This is the MakeMKV software support forum and how UHD Drives directly relate/function with this specific piece of software for decrypting/ripping, not a general hardware/Windows support forum. There are thousands of those types of forums readibly available already.

Couple basic general suggestions:

Are you 100% sure the drive is hooked up and mounted correctly to your PC?

Connected to a completely different PC behaves the same way?

Try searching on Google or other actual hardware/Windows support forum to see if there are known issues with your hardware/OS combination.

Return/exchange the drive.

Try LG support.

the chances you take buying open box:

Preparing an RMA for LG.

Model BH16NS40, svc code NS 50, rom ver. 102**

**rom ver. now reported as 1.03, serial number altered as well, requesting replacement from the same build date OR restore factory loaded firmware to match the sticker. current firmware revision unusable with my current configuration**

Odds of success: maybe 50/50 :-)

Assuming no firmware updates have been made, is a Asus BC-12D2HT manufactured in Dec 2017 likely to be compatible? Or had these drives had the newer firmware factory installed?

There is a possibility it will be friendly, but YOU need to try it. Additionally, MakeMKV will report the firmware version to YOU when you open it and it detects the drive(s) installed. It will additionally help you verify if it's friendly or not.

Firmware that fixed the loophole typically started to ship around this time for SOME drives. Not all.

If you buy an a SATA > USB 3.0/3.1 enclosure and add the bare drive yourself sure, for an LG, ASUS not so much. There's one made by Vantec which is around 45 and change, decent quality but not stellar. The OWC Mercury Pro is the highest quality enclosure I've seen but I'm also US. In Europe they've got the Icy Box which I assume is the same type of deal.

I've never even seen a true half size external slim or not slim drive for that matter that was of the UHD friendly variety.

I'm still dying to know the true story of this fiasco from all parties concerned. And how the firmware went unpatched for 3.5 years. I've probably already posted this but one my managers right now was with Fry's in the summer of 2015 and he said guys were coming in even then starting to ask about very specific makes and models of optical drives. If the white paper for the UHD Blu Ray disc was not released until August then I'd assume someone got the specs for the AACS 2.0 earlier than that? I mean we know that LG and ASUS didn't get that memo, or didn't care.

All I know is that makemkv is fucking excellent software and besides making me broker than shit it's also provided me with 40TB of UHD content that I'll hopefully watch before I die, and enough UHD Blu Rays to bury a medium sized horse!

No seriously though, Mike is the man!

While I do have access to more it's simply not worth the time it takes to justify the costs I incur in continually supplying original factory flashed units to everyone who asks.
This was fun in the beginning but now has become a chore and quite frankly a pain in the ass. So with all due respect I'm out, PMs and emails will no longer be reponsded to. Anyone who has paid in advance will receive a unit, if possible, or a refund. Plenty of unscrupulous flashers everywhere who can set you up with instructions only the most techniccal with oldest computers will be able to complete. The rest who don't want to bother with that will be sold flashed units because everything should be priced like Amazon and receive zero support, much less a warranty. Collecting 4K UHD Blu Rays is not an inexpensive hobby. Cheap fucks with the bit torrents and ripping rental discs to save money boo fucking hoo. Too expensive, your participation is neither required nor appreicated.
On a postivie note I've had a blast learning about the 4K UHD obsession and that would not be possible without makemkv.
I take exception to the idea that installing different software on a piece of hardware you own and you purchased is somehow unscrupulous. How is it any different than using a factory flashed unit anyway? The only difference is that someone in Taiwan flashed it instead of you--that's what EEPROM is: Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. You erase it, and you can write a different firmware to it. It's erasable precisely so you can change the firmware.

Also, it's really not all that difficult to do if you're a detail-oriented person. I understand your business is impacted and that you've put a lot of effort into acquiring and reselling factory flashed units which I'm sure the people who received them are grateful for, but some people don't want to pay the premium, or want to do things themselves. We're all looking to back up our collection in the exact same way, it's just a different way of prepping the hardware.
