Best drive - I don't care about UHD

Post by herculeesjr »

I'm surprised I can't seem to find this question already asked, maybe I fail at searching or I'm just odd. I currently have an LG BP50NB40 external slimline that I shucked and installed in my laptop (it had a USB 2.0 bottleneck). It runs faithfully at ripping blu-ray movies around almost 4x but I want something faster. Slimline would be great as my home "server" has a slimline drive slot but I don't mind having a USB 3.0 external drive either. My thing is I don't care about UHD and I won't for years, I'll never care about 3D. The only TV in the house is 1080p and not that old, 4k is beautiful but I'm happy with my 1080p.
So TL:DR what would be the best drive for standard blu-ray movie ripping? If it can also rip UHD that's fine and a nice bonus, but my main focus is fast standard HD movies. I'd like a slimline but it doesn't look like there are any noticeably faster than what I already own, so I'll probably get a full size and get a USB 3.0 enclosure.
My current drive I installed in my laptop: http://www.lg.com/us/burners-drives/lg- ... -dvd-drive
Consideration for slimline: http://www.lg.com/us/burners-drives/lg-BU40N (apparently needs custom firmware?)
Consideration for full size: https://www.asus.com/us/Optical-Drives- ... /BW16D1HT/ (everyone seems to love this drive, might need a simple firmware downgrade is all)

Even if you don't care about UHD, the "UHD-friendly" drives are good recommendations. For now, you can ignore the firmware levels, because they'll work just fine for non-UHD, even with the "wrong firmware".
