Anyone here have the Pioneer BDR-209D?

Hello,

I had an IHBS112 and I was hoping for a faster reader so I got the Pioneer BDR-209D. Turns out that with makemkv, the BDR-209d is often slower than my old ihbs112 with makemkv but is faster with other apps. Last night I found out that BDR-209d couldn't read a disc properly with makemkv that my old player could. I tested that disc with another app and it worked fine. Is there any trick I can do to adjust my BDR-209D?

I recently purchased a BDR-209D (firmware v1.30) to replace an older Samsung DVD RW drive. The old drive was able to read at 10x, the new one only hits 1.9x.

Not sure what's going on but you're not alone.

Some drives have what is called "ripstop" limits in their firmware, that prevent them from ripping at faster than 2x speed. There are sites that offer replacement firmware to remove the limitation. I am not sure if Pioneer is one of the companies that includes this "feature".

I have had excellent luck with LG drives, and have seen 10x rip speeds on BDs, 17-18x on DVDs, under ideal circumstances (long file, towards the outside of the disk).

I hit 12x on my LG UH12NS30. Not all discs though.

I've had the Pioneer BDR-209D for several months now. It seems to have some kind of partial rip lock. Only with Fox Distributed Discs do I run into being limited to 2X ripping. Discs distributed by other companies see speeds of up to 8x for dual layer and up to 12x for single layer.

I also have a Pioneer BDC-207D. For some reason this drive does not have any issue with Fox distributed Discs. I can rip at up to 8x for all dual layer discs with disc drive.

I have run into over three dozen titles that the BDR-209D was limited to 2X ripping. And every one was a Fox Distributed disc.
