[UHD] Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (French edition, AACS v70) – Endless analysis, invalid M2TS

Post by johnraz »

Disc: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (French UHD edition)

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a reproducible issue with the French 4K UHD Blu-ray edition of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

MakeMKV cannot complete the initial disc analysis. It repeatedly reports invalid M2TS data, and the debug log keeps growing until I manually cancel the operation.

1. Environment
  • MakeMKV: 2.0.0 (Windows x64)
  • Drive: Pioneer BDR-UD04 (Verbatim external enclosure)
  • Firmware: 1.14, original/unpatched
  • LibreDrive: Enabled (v02.1)
  • Disc label: HUNGER GAMES LA REVOLTE PARTIE 2
  • Protection: AACS 2.0/C v70
  • Disc type: UHD BD-ROM, 3 layers, 93.21 GB
  • Internet access: Enabled
  • Direct disc access: Enabled
2. Problem and errors

MakeMKV repeatedly reports corrupt or invalid data in /BDMV/STREAM/00005.m2ts.

The problem occurs during the initial disc analysis, before the title list is displayed.

The analysis never completes and the debug log grows continuously. I manually cancelled it after the log reached approximately 70 MB.

3. Relevant log excerpts

Debug log summary

Code: Select all

MakeMKV version: 2.0.0
Log size: approximately 70 MB
Corrupt or invalid messages: 1279
Explicit SCSI errors: 0
Explicit hash-check failures: 0
Unknown volume key messages: 0
AACS dump generated: No
Failed to decode audio/video data: 2
Analysis completed: No (manually cancelled)
The counts above are based on text searches of the captured log.

4. Troubleshooting performed
  • Connected the drive directly to a motherboard USB port — same issue.
  • Created a full backup with "Decrypt video files" enabled — backup reportedly completed successfully.
  • Opening the backup locally reproduces the M2TS errors.
  • VLC cannot play the backed-up M2TS files.
  • MediaInfo identifies only the filename and size of 00005.m2ts, without detecting audio/video tracks.
  • Xreveal with KEYDB reports "The decryption key was not found".
  • No MKB20_v70_*.tgz AACS dump was generated or found.
5. Potentially related reports

I found a potentially related report concerning the Italian UHD edition with AACS v70:

Mockingjay Part 2 UHD – Italian edition

In that case, the user reported successfully using BDKey + Xreveal + MakeMKV.

However, unlike that case, my MakeMKV logs do not report an unknown volume key or generate an AACS dump.

There are also reports of difficulties ripping the French UHD edition using other drives.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

First, you're using the buggy version of MakeMKV. Try the rip with version 1.18 or 1.17. If you don't have it, you can download it from here.

Also, clean the disk. While version 2.0.0 has problems, some of the errors you received are read errors, which mean your drive is having trouble reading the disk.

Hey !

Thanks a lot for the response, I tried with both 1.18 and 2.0.0 and got the same error.

I also managed to make a backup of the disk. Same errors are showing when trying to rip the backup file so I doubt its related to a dirty disk, it’s brand new and spotless…

Any other clues ?

Cheers

Clean the disc. A brand new disc, fresh out of the box is usually when it needs to be cleaned. Often, UHD discs have an invisible layer of film on them from the manufacturing process that needs to be cleaned off.

Try a different drive. As silly as it sounds, some drives just don't like some discs and won't read them, yet they can work fine in another drive.

So, your options are to:

1. Try a different drive
2. Get a replacement disc.

Well I don't have any other drive available...
I don't understand how it can make a backup of the all disk and error the same way on the hard drive backup if it's a read error?
Anyway, will resort to read this one from my PS5.
Thanks again for the feed-back!

You were lucky the backup even completed. Normally it would fail with the same error. The backup must still have the same problem section.

s to have bought the disk 3 times

Nothing special on the disc. Could just be a bad pressing. There are some. The LotR set comes to mind.
