Is there a way to "fix" Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10 to tip triple layers again or is it dead due to wear & tear over the years?

That's weird! So you say the drive reads BDs and double-layer UHD discs still OK? If so it can only be a polluted laser lens or a dying blue laser.

yes bd25,50,66 all work. it's always the triple layer that cant be read.

JediFonger, sounds like your drive's gone on strike at the third layer... bit like my Defender at the first hillJediFonger wrote:yes bd25,50,66 all work. it's always the triple layer that cant be read.

i ran this issue through gen-AI and this was a new suggestion that i hadn't thought of:
i do often leave the drive bay open for easy access, so my guess dust may have gotten into the drive and fuked up the rails.
• The Rail De-gunk: While the drive is open, look at the two metal rods the laser assembly slides on. PC cases pull in dust, which mixes with factory grease to create a sticky sludge. Wipe the rails completely clean with alcohol, then apply a tiny drop of white lithium grease or sewing machine oil to the rails. Slide the laser carrier back and forth manually to distribute it.

used a laser cleaner already didnt fix it. most likely rail or somn physical. there is a ton of dis-assembly videos on youtube when i've got a bit more downtime i'll tear it down and see what's going on.

Laser cleaners are a jokeJediFonger wrote: Fri Nov 06, 2026 2:20 pm used a laser cleaner already didnt fix it. most likely rail or somn physical. there is a ton of dis-assembly videos on youtube when i've got a bit more downtime i'll tear it down and see what's going on.
Take the drive apart and clean the lasers the movement is not the issue since it moves for other discs
I have instructions for this
I have troubleshoot thousands of drives and sold 10,000+ never once has cleaning the rails fixed bd100 reading issue when other discs read

doesnt TL require more precise movement and if the rail is screwed it wont read the TLs? i can hear the drive making mechanical noises like it's choking or somn when trying to read TLs

BD66 have the same density as BD100 (33GB per layer). I would also open the drive to clean the laser lens directly.JediFonger wrote: Fri Nov 06, 2026 2:42 pm doesnt TL require more precise movement and if the rail is screwed it wont read the TLs? i can hear the drive making mechanical noises like it's choking or somn when trying to read TLs
