I also made an account to comment on this
rip got hung up early as well, estimated time went over 8hrs, dropped down to only about 2.5hrs total. Audio track is all stuttery (listed as "Unknown (DTS-HD MA 5.1)") and there's no video track whatsoever. I'm not able to look at it closer as I left for work while it ripped but I'm glad I'm not the only one!

bumping this again until someone takes notice. may have to just create its own topic since i think these liongate discs are going to continue being a problem for our community going forward and i don't think it's going to be isolated to just this particular release.SlippyFist wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:29 pm So I just got my collector's edition in today, and my drive won't even read Disc 1. It just won't play. It spins up and tries a bunch of times over the course of a couple minutes but it just won't "turn over" so to speak and the drive just gives up, leaving you with what Windows thinks is an empty drive. I can't even get to the part where i try ripping a backup.
I tried Disc 2 and it loaded/played right away, so something is definitely up with Disc 1. I dunno why they'd bother copy protecting just the first disc though.
Drive is an LG WP50NB40 SVC NB52 that I flashed to a BU40N 1.00
just threw it in my DP-UB820 and it plays just fineDrive Information

and again, i am endlessly frustrated because i have no idea how any of you guys are getting your drives to even read your disc 1. if windows can't detect the disc in the drive, then makemkv will see it as empty, and you cant even begin to try making backups or anything from an empty drive. the other 3 dics- including the blu-ray disc 1- all play just fine. for whatever reason they only put this obnoxious protection on the first UHD disc.
Considering the success of this copyright protection- and the hoops ya'll had to jump through to sufficiently circumvent it- i fully expect other companies are going to start implementing their own version of it. i'm hoping a real valid workaround or update that fixes this is released, as this is definitely going to keep me away from buying their releases

Your disc not being recognised as a disc by your drive is in no way a form of copy protection. It is just a disc of marginal/borderline quality. The DV specific behaviour appears to be a bug in MakeMKV but there is no indication this authoring quirk was made to thwart MakeMKV given it was gracefully handled by MKVToolnix.SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:19 am ...for whatever reason they only put this obnoxious protection on the first UHD disc.

Quite a few DVDs and some Blu-rays did utilise a form of copy protection based on unreadable sectors but these discs still allowed playback via licensed playback solutions on PC hardware.
Public KeyDB Disc Submissions
- The MKB_RO.inf file from the original disc is required
- Do not submit Stranger Things
- Place the extracted keydb.cfg file in the same directory as your disc dump files

Re: Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair UHD rip not progressing
how could it be an issue of disc quality if it plays in real 4K players? i dropped it into my DP-UB820 and it plays perfectly fine. i was really hoping that it wouldn't so i could chalk it up to an actual disc defect, but as far as i can tell it only doesn't work in burner drives. And again, it's not my drive- i have literally 100 other movies i can drop in and test and every one of them works fine first time. i tried it over and over and over again, dozens or hundreds of times, to see if i could get it to stick just one time, but no dice. it's like trying to start a car with a dead battery- its just not going to turn over no matter how many times you try. if this isn't actual copyright protection then it's an unbelievable set of coincidences taking place and i don't really believe that at all.keydb_helper wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 2:16 pmSlippyFist wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:29 pm So I just got my collector's edition in today, and my drive won't even read Disc 1. either way- what do i do? i'm not really inclined to spend a bunch of money gambling with another drive that i have no idea will actually work or not (and why would it, if its an issue of 'disc quality'). what would you do in this situation?
i didn't mention it but i had also tried updating the keydb.cfg thing (something i originally did when i flashed and set up the drive) but that obviously didn't change anything

Re: Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair UHD rip not progressing
You are free to believe what you wish. I have over 900 UHDs that I've ripped, and the LG drives sucked on almost all the triple layer discs. When I moved to Pio drives my issues vanished. It doesn't matter that your drive "reads 100 discs just fine" or that it "works in a UB820". Your drive is not reading THIS disc. And it's not some magical new copy protection. Many of us, including me, had no problem whatsoever reading it. I made a combined MKV file from disc 1 and 2 using mkvtoolnix without any issues at all. Ripped from my Pio drive. But as I said, you are free to cling to the "it's not my drive" idea if you so desire.

Disc drives exhibit a significant variability in quality and performance with borderline discs. I'm sure there are quite a few standalone players which would not be able to play or recognise your disc. It is a really unfortunate aspect of physical media.SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:58 pm how could it be an issue of disc quality if it plays in real 4K players? i dropped it into my DP-UB820 and it plays perfectly fine.
This is the key point: it doesn't work in your computer disc drive. But there are many other physical copies, from the same publisher and production run, which do work with computer disc drives.SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:58 pm i was really hoping that it wouldn't so i could chalk it up to an actual disc defect, but as far as i can tell it only doesn't work in burner drives.
I just checked the public keydb submissions for disc 1 of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. These two disc dump variants were produced with the listed drives:
MKB20_v82_Kill_Bill-_The_Whole_Bloody_Affair_Disc_1_2F3E.tgz: BU40N 1.00DE
MKB20_v82_THE_WHOLE_BLOODY_AFFAIR_UHD_D1_FCC2.tgz: BDR-UD04 1.14
And a third was also submitted with an unspecified drive. I'm not sure which corresponds to your particular pressing but there are clearly computer disc drives which are capable of reading the disc.
A better battery analogy would be modelling disc & drive quality as functionally corresponding to battery voltage. Your other discs are above the quality threshold (battery voltage) required for your disc drive (engine) to turn over. But if the quality/voltage was lowered to below the critical threshold...SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:58 pm it's like trying to start a car with a dead battery- its just not going to turn over no matter how many times you try.
If this were an actual copy protection measure, we wouldn't see so many users with consumer drives effortlessly producing disc dump files and complete disc backups.SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:58 pm if this isn't actual copyright protection then it's an unbelievable set of coincidences taking place and i don't really believe that at all.
Two options:SlippyFist wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2026 3:58 pm either way- what do i do? i'm not really inclined to spend a bunch of money gambling with another drive that i have no idea will actually work or not (and why would it, if its an issue of 'disc quality'). what would you do in this situation?
- Exchange the disc at your place of purchase by explaining that you couldn't play it on your player
- Buy a different computer disc drive
