Weird issues with ET metadata I guess

Post by bobbogee »

So I have tried ripping the $K UHD version of ET The Extraterrestrial a couple of time, once a couple of years ago and now just yesterday after starting to work with the Mac OS version. I did the second rip because, while the movie itself plays just fine, all of the meta information is crazy - just random title etc. So I thought with the new version that I would try re-ripping the disc and as before, the movie plays but the you wouldn't know that the movie was ET from the JellyFin server. Now it shows with all the metadata and titles for a Brazilian movie 'Joelma - Eso e Calyso Tour .... ' (it was a different movie on the first rip but I don't remember what that movie was.

Im guessing that I can edit this in JellyFin, but what the heck is causing this?

I don't use JellyFin, so I can't speak what's happening there. However, in general I think it is a good practice to get as much metadata correct in the .mkv file as you can.

MakeMKV allows you to type in the names of things if you have Expert Mode enabled. There's a checkbox on the General tab in Preferences. Once that is on, you'll be able to properly name the movie and name things like commentary audio tracks or the various subtitle tracks.

After the movie is ripped into a .mkv file you can see lots of details including the names of everything using MediaInfo utility. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

You can change metadata details in .mkv files using either MKVToolNix GUI (https://mkvtoolnix.download) or the command line version: mkvpropedit.

Once you make sure the metadata is correct in the .mkv file, it will likely improve the odds that JellyFin's matching will work properly. If it still fails, there is probably a way to fix the match manually or tell JellyFin explicitly what the movie is.
