No green button

Post by psychdude »

I recently downloaded MakeMKV and purchased a key. In the past I have used the program with success. Now, I’m on pop os cosmic now but in the past Ubuntu and Mac OS. I purchased an external Libre blu ray drive from someone on this forum. When I load a dvd, it gives me an option to back up to an iso. When I insert a blu ray, it allows me to create the backup and folders for the blu ray. However, there is no big green screen to makemkv. I used this program in the past, so I know what the big green button is, but it no longer is there. I can change the program properties but don’t want to mess things up or make it worse. Can you guys help?

First of all, you probably should not use version 2.0.0 unless it somehow enables you to purchase a key, and even then, you should still downgrade afterwards. This latest version is buggy.

You should use 1.18.4 on Windows, Linux, and Mac, the only exception being when you use Linux and want to flash/dump a firmware or when you want to set the speed of a Pioneer drive to Performance, in that case you should downgrade all the way back to makemkv-bin-1.17.6 and upgrade back to 1.18.4 afterwards.

I don't know about MakeMKV 2.0.0, but with MakeMKV 1.18.4 there are two buttons with green arrows, namely the Backup button (when loading a disc or ISO file into MakeMKV), and the Save Selected Titles button (after a disc or ISO file has been opened).
When I load a dvd, it gives me an option to back up to an iso. When I insert a blu ray, it allows me to create the backup and folders for the blu ray.
This is the expected behavior. MakeMKV does not make Blu-ray ISOs (with UDF 2.50). If you would like to create an ISO file for a Blu-ray disc, you should use another program. Generally people use IMGBurn (with WINE if needed), however I've also heard that on Linux, enabling LibreDrive with MakeMKV and then making an ISO file with dd is also an option.

Use DD to create an ISO from the disc

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/some/folder/iso_name_here.iso
Obviously you'll have to replace the dev device with the dev device of your UHD drive and the folder path and ISO name but it'll work.
