Fake drive's PSA

Post by Billycar11 »

lets start calling out the sellers and listings of fake drives on ebay and wherever else it will probably do little good but im kinda tired of the emails and people getting scammed
as well as database of what the fake cases look like.

Newer seller named DiscDriveDepot
Link to Fake Drives^^^^

When I received them, inside the shells were very old Pioneer BDR-UD04TBD. They flashed firmware to make it look like a BP50NB40. I knew something was off when I plugged in, loaded up MKV and almost no info came up at all except for the fake drive name. The seller wants me to return it, but part of me also doesn’t want to because they’ll just reuse the same parts and scam someone else.

I’m fairly new to this, and it’s my own mistake. I’ve definitely learned a lesson. Still looking for a reasonably priced drive! If anyone has more info on in stock drives, please reach out!

I feel like maybe a list of legit sellers would be helpful as well. I sampled the waters a few too many times trying to find that one good seller at a hell of a deal.

Some help to spot the real Pioneers.
The serial number, production time and original model name before a crossflash can`t be altered.
You should demand to see this data before a buy and it has to match exactly!
Also here are some pictures of 100% real ones to compare:

Pioneer BDR-S08XLT

Pioneer BDR-UD03 OEM Slim

NOS Pioneer BDR-UD03 slim (crossflashed to BDR-UD04)
NOS Pioneer BDR-S08XLT fullsize (crossflashed to BD-RW BDR-S11)

Your not wrong but the only sellers I trust are here or 1st party like b&h shipped and sold by Amazon and newegg...

There was only 1 seller here that I know was unreliable and now they are gone thankfully

Here's another. I won't come right out with an accusation. Got my $ back. Also, the description changed after this interaction.

Photos and link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/800658492842
DiscDriveDepot

Drive ordered
Questioned seller in chat about 4k and concerns over counterfeits. Refunded immediately!
Drive received in mail (See 2023 Dates on case!)
Image

What the above Drive SHOWS up as in MakeMKV
Image

My own real ASUS that is the correct revision/specs
Image

Now is the drive Counterfeit? I don't know. But I do know for sure. Its MT1939. It Says year 2113 in the MakeMKV information it pulls up. (2013, error?) The OUTER CASE is labeled Dec 2023. WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD. Technically it is an Asus drive as listed. but ancient AND the part that i really dont like. the labels are wrong.

Also, seller recommended I repurchase, this one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/800634357376?b ... noapp=true

Its got 'interesting photos' on ebay too. https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw ... 8800005007 .. Look at those dates. They don't even match ON the labels!

Seller refunded the moment i started asking questions. EVEN THOUGH the had already shipped it. CYA Maybe? Also reported to ebay as potential counterfeit merch. doubt that will go anywhere.

Thoughts?

Yes, it is an old, 2013 model that they have cleaned up and slapped a new "manufactured in 2023" label on the case.
Cheers :D

Sellers ebl-2377 and dalekss on eBay are both selling LG BP55EB40 EB52 drives that have had their shells opened and the drives replaced with 2013 Panasonic drives that have been flashed with firmware that makes them appear to be LG drives but with unusual firmware versions.

In ebl-2377's case, the drive was listed as open box but essentially new. The site's being really glitchy with attaching images so here's an imgur of what I got: https://imgur.com/a/ZJCIJrh

The listing said no returns were accepted but I filed a return anyway and got a refund within a few hours and didn't have to send the drive back.

Later, I tried to purchase one from dalekss and this one was listed as new. To make this even more of a facepalm, I DM'd the seller and specifically said I'd been scammed once already and wanted his written confirmation that these were new drives. He said yes. I got the same scam: https://imgur.com/a/2F5fPha

I've submitted a refund request for this too and am waiting for a response. I suspect like the first one, I'll just get my money back again.

I have no idea how these sellers have such crazy high feedback ratings but they're either scammers or are being scammed and reselling the products blindly without checking. Given that the listings for the drives are still up (they had multiple of them), I'm guessing the former. Do not buy from these people.

I can't afford $325USD for a pre-modded drive from here and despite these still supposedly being in production, they are impossible to find anywhere new so I guess I'll just have to skip out on this. I haven't tested these Panasonic drives yet but hopefully they can actually still read regular Blu-rays. I can probably resell them clearly stating what they are for like $50 or something maybe.

Same seller for mine. Got refund immediately. but they want the opportunity to sell it to someone else. Should we return the drives? What are our moral obligations to other buyers? Also, is the mailing label even real or is that also fake? Who knows.

I'd return the drive but aside from leaving negative feedback, report the seller to eBay for suspicious activity, which you can do here: https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022

If the seller requires the item back for you to get your refund, it's not on you to eat the cost of a fraudulant item because they're a scammer. If people report them and eBay doesn't take action, that's on them.

Well, if they want you to return it, you should do so but that doesn't stop you from reporting the seller and leaving negative feedback explaining that the drive was fake. Hopefully other potential customers would read this feedback.

Be careful when returning!!! I had multiple Chinese sellers send me a shipping label that will scan at drop off but there is actually multiple barcodes. It will get delivered to a different address and eBay will show you never shipped it back.

Lessons and info

Ebay buyer protection is good for 30days

Always take unboxing pics

Always refuse the discount offer to keep it the from the seller. This is a common scam tactic. Just keep repeating u want full refund that this was a fraudulent sale.

When u request a return always choose item is not as described. Take pictures and provide as much information as u can

Always request that it is shipped back using ebays internal return shipping option not their own

When dropping off the package for return get the return receipt. Only way to argue it was shipped and used for evidence for eBay disputes.

Don't be afraid to ask eBay to step in and help.

I've decided not to return it at all. Its in the box, with the label they gave me on it. They went from "We'll send a courier" to "You take it to the post office" to "we'll reimburse you a small fee" (right.) I spoke to Ebay support, On the phone. They said since it was refunded I can dispose of it any way i feel like. I don't need it but im not going to HELP them. We gotta get these things to be painful enough that it will stop.

Ebay rep on phone reviewed the whole chat and advised me, and even blessed my last response (helped me write it):

"I spoke to ebay on the phone. they have advised for there to be no further contact. Since you refunded me the issue is closed. Do not contact me again. Ebay has reviewed this conversation and situation."
