Can't Rip from a supposed clean iso

Post by Reineke26 »

I have some Blu-rays that have reading problems but I managed to make a clean iso with ddrescue. It reported a clean image but when I tried to actually rip the movie I get reading errors halfway through. Does that mean the file on the disk is corrupted from the get go or that ddrescue is wrong?

What is the model of your drive?
What drive firmware are you using?

LG drives that use LG firmware usually have a feature called jamless playback. If a disc had a scratch, the drive would skip that section so the movie wouldn't freeze during playback. The problem is that this feature reports false reads to ddrescue. The only fix is to use flash ASUS firmware, but these are only available for "5.25 desktop drives. If you have an LG slim drive like a BU40N, you're stuck with LG firmware and jamless playback.

I'm using a BH50N with LibreDrive firmware from the Forum.

Which is an LG. What firmware did you flash it to?
Cheers :D

I flashed the "DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin" from the "All you need firmware pack" from MartyMcNuts. I know everything still works, I successfully ripped everything from CDs to UHDs.

You have a desktop drive, so that's good news.

The DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin is LG firmware. It has jamless playback enabled, so disc errors are incorrectly reported to ddrescue.

You can resolve this by flashing ASUS firmware, which doesn't have jamless playback. I recommend using Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10MK. It should be in the "All you need firmware pack".

However, there is a small caveat. ASUS firmware has the UHD sleep bug. The drive will shut off with a UHD disc inserted if it stays idle for too long. This isn't an issue for MakeMKV or Xreveal since they employ sleep bug mitigation measures during ripping. ddrescue doesn't do this, so the drive could shut off during recovery. This isn't a problem on the software side, ddrescue uses .map files, so you can pick up where you left off after you turn the drive back on. However, too many abrupt power shutoffs may damage the drive. The sleep bug isn't a problem with standard Blu-rays, DVD's, or other media.
