UHD Read only drives

Post by WunderWagen »

Starting to put together my MKV system to rip my movie collection, in looking at the recommended UHD drive list is shows mostly read/write drives which are hard to find and expensive. Is there any issue with using read only optical drives since no writes are needed? If so, is there a list for these types of optical drives that would work with MakeMKV? I could not find anything on search about this...

I'm certain there are not any read only drives that are UHD compatible. There is one combo drive I can think of which is the ASUS BC-12D2HT but these were discontinued a couple of years ago, the same time as the BW-16D1HT.

Don't fall for the Chinese fakes! These drives are no longer being manufactured and the chinese fakes are usually 12+ year old drives.

That's the issue, drives are getting more expensive every day as both Pioneer and LG are no longer making them. LG are only fulfilling their OEM orders for Verbatim, Buffalo, Archgon etc then that's it.
Cheers :D

Understood, thanks for the reply Marty... I will work from the approved drive list then.
