Lost in Space (1965) Everything you need to know

Post by h.tmp@xisia.com »

Lost in Space: The Complete Adventures (2015 Blu-ray, 18 discs): MakeMKV title order is not broadcast order. Disc / title / episode map for all 83 episodes plus the unaired pilot, notes on the bonus material, and why I put the extras in an "Other" folder for Plex

Why I'm posting this
I ripped the whole set and tagged every file with its disc and MakeMKV title number, so I can show exactly how MakeMKV lists these discs. If you name files by title number, the first disc of each season will give you the wrong episode numbers. I also went through the bonus material, and some of it is redundant, so this may save you some ripping and encoding time.

Set layout
  • Season 1: 6 discs. 29 episodes in black and white, plus the unaired pilot "No Place to Hide" on disc 6. (My disc 6 was hiding under a folded flap of the jacket, so count your discs.)
  • Season 2: 6 discs, 30 episodes, colour.
  • Season 3: 6 discs, 24 episodes, colour. Discs 1-5 hold episodes. Disc 6 is bonus material only.
  • Some bonus items sit on episode discs: "Never Fear, Smith Is Here" is on Season 2 disc 1, and the shorter pilot is on Season 3 disc 5.
  • That is 83 broadcast episodes plus the pilot, so 84 files in total.
The problem: MakeMKV title order is not broadcast order
On several discs the title numbers do not follow episode order. The first disc of each season is the worst:
  • Season 1 disc 1: T03 = E01, T04 = E02, T00 = E03, T01 = E04, T02 = E05
  • Season 2 disc 1: T05 = E01, T04 = E02, T00 = E03, T01 = E04, T02 = E05 (T03 is a bonus item, see below)
  • Season 3 disc 1: T05 = E01, T04 = E02, T00 = E03, T01 = E04, T02 = E05 (T03 is a title I did not rip)
Other discs with out-of-order titles:
  • Season 1 disc 5: T00-T03 are E22-E25, and E21 is at T04
  • Season 1 disc 6: T00 is the pilot, then T01 = E27, T02 = E26, T03 = E28, T04 = E29
  • Season 2 disc 2: T00 = E07 and T01 = E06 (swapped)
  • Season 3 disc 2: T04 = E07, T05 = E06, T00 = E08, T01 = E09, T02 = E10
The remaining discs run in broadcast order. I identified every episode by playing the start of each one until the episode title appeared at the end of the opening credits, then checked the titles against IMDb's episode list and air dates.

How to match your titles
  • Match by season, disc and title number using the map below. The numbers are zero-based in the file names MakeMKV writes (the first title on a disc is t00).
  • All the episodes run about 50 minutes, so runtime tells you a title is an episode but not which one. Use the map.
  • Gaps in the title numbers are titles I did not rip (for example Season 3 disc 1 T03, Season 3 disc 2 T03, Season 3 disc 3 T00). I did not record what they contain, and they are not missing episodes.
  • Bonus title numbers (such as T66, T64 and T63 on Season 3 disc 6) depend on the minimum title length set in MakeMKV. I used a low minimum so short items were listed. With a higher minimum, some short items may not appear or may be numbered differently, so match bonus items by name and runtime, not by number.
Full map (season, disc, MakeMKV title, episode, name, US air date). The pilot was never broadcast in 1965; I used 04-24-1993, the date IMDb lists.

The unaired pilot: a long and a short version
The set contains "No Place to Hide" twice:
  • Long version, about 52 minutes: Season 1 disc 6, T00. This is the original unaired pilot. It has no Dr. Smith and no Robot, and uses music from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in place of the John Williams score. The cast commentary on the Blu-ray is on this version.
  • Short version, about 44 minutes: Season 3 disc 5, T03. Published accounts describe it as the shorter edited cut of the same pilot: the credits are moved, a number of scenes are trimmed, and a scream from Penny is replaced by a short "oh!".
I kept the long version as S01E00 and did not keep the short one.

The widescreen "Condemned of Space"
Season 3 disc 6 has a "widescreen version" of "Condemned of Space" (about 51 minutes, T00). The show was shot on 35mm film framed for 4:3 (about 1.37:1), so as I understand it from discussion threads, the widescreen version is a crop of the top and bottom of the normal picture and not a different or recovered original. It is the same episode as S03E01. I did not keep it.

Bonus material: what is on the set and what I kept
These are the 12 bonus titles I ripped. Runtimes are from the encoded files and the tag is season / disc / title. Descriptions come from the item titles and published reviews, not from me checking each one, unless noted.

  • The Epilogue (2015): reviews describe a table read of Bill Mumy's unproduced 1980 epilogue script with Mumy, Angela Cartwright, Marta Kristen, Mark Goddard and others.
  • Dick Tufeld Tribute: Tufeld was the series narrator and the voice of the Robot.
  • Never Fear, Smith Is Here, Memories, Bill Mumy Danger and The Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen: I am going by the titles only.
  • Overlap: the longer Cast Interviews (2015) already contains two of the other bonus items. It opens with the Guy Williams Tribute and the Bill Mumy Lunchbox played back to back, and then the interviews. Those two make up about 9 of its 18 minutes, so if you keep Cast Interviews you do not need to keep them separately.
I kept five items: Never Fear Smith Is Here, Memories, Cast Interviews 2015, Dick Tufeld Tribute 2015 and Bill Mumy Danger. The source files for the other seven are still on my drive.
Some reviews also mention bonus items I did not rip, such as a 6-minute "Original Network Presentation" (Season 1 disc 6) and two 1966 radio interviews (Season 2 disc 6). They are not in my list, and I do not know how they are listed on your discs.

If your target is Plex: put the bonus material in a folder called "Other"
I wanted the extras in Plex without making them fake episodes. Plex recognises extras only in a short list of exact folder names, placed in the show folder (or inside a season folder): Behind The Scenes, Deleted Scenes, Featurettes, Interviews, Scenes, Shorts, Trailers, Other. "Bonus" is not on the list, so a folder with that name is ignored. How the options compare:
  • An "Other" folder beside the Season folders: the items appear as extras on the show page. They are not counted as episodes, need no episode numbering or metadata matching, and the file name becomes the item's title, so a clean name like "Cast Interviews 2015.m4v" is all you need. It suits a mix of tributes, interviews, a pilot and specials in one folder with no sorting decisions.
  • The other named folders (Interviews, Featurettes and so on): these work the same way and are more precise, so use them if you want the extras split by type. For a handful of mixed items I did not think the split was worth it.
  • Season 00 (Specials): each item becomes a fake episode, which needs S00Exx naming and has to be matched to metadata that may not exist.
  • Loose files in a Season folder, or a folder named Bonus: Plex will probably not recognise them, and they end up unmatched or ignored.
What I saw: after rescanning the library, clicking the show shows the seasons, and below them an "Extras" section lists all five of my kept items by their clean file names. Plex also adds its own online trailer to that section, which is not one of my files. It looked the same in Plex in Windows Chrome and in the Plex app on Android. I did not test other clients (Apple TV, Roku, Android TV), and Plex forum posts say extras support is uneven between clients.

File naming I used for the episodes

Code: Select all

Lost in Space (1965) S01E01 The Reluctant Stowaway, D01T03, 09-15-1965.m4v
The season and episode number is what Plex reads. The disc and title tag (D01T03) is only there so I can trace a file back to its disc, and the air date is for reference.

Encoding (HandBrake, NVEnc H.264)
  • Season 1 (black and white): 5000 kbps average. Seasons 2 and 3 (colour): 6000 kbps average. I compared 4500 to 7500 kbps on sample episodes and saw little visible difference, so I erred on the high side.
  • Audio: AC3 mono, 128 kbps, for compatibility.
  • Output is .m4v with automatic cropping and the default decomb filter.
If you have a different edition of this show, the title numbers may differ, so check them against runtimes before trusting the map. Corrections welcome.
