Hey guys
So, i got a new verbatim 43888 that has a BU40N with a 1.5 firmware i sdf flashed it to the BU40N from the "all firmware you need" pack, and it works perfectly fine ripping 4k discs, at least the one i tried ripped fine (Bourne Identity), however can someone explain the sleep bug?
And if it is present in my drive if i succesfully flashed it to the 1.03? If so, how to i fix it?
Also, i forgot to make a backup of the original firmware, does this matter? If so, can i just get an original 1.5 firmware and use the flasher if i need to return it under warranty? If so, where do i get an original firmware?
And last, is there a reason to further downgrade the firmware?
Thank you for your help

Your drive does not have the sleep bug. Official UHD drive's/firmware do not have it, only "friendly" UHD drive's/firmware do.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Wed Sep 30, 2026 7:10 pm Hey guys

You can't backup the original v1.05 firmware.
Cheers

Last question, any reason to flash to 1.0?
Other than that it works like a charm.

v1.0 is compatible with all good ripping software. MK firmware is only compatible with MakeMKV and Xreveal.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Thu Oct 01, 2026 1:13 pmThank you very much for the answers..MartyMcNuts wrote: Thu Oct 01, 2026 1:30 amYour drive does not have the sleep bug. Here, courtesy of RibShark : https://workupload.com/file/pvw2FG6GarF
You can attempt to flash this BU40N 1.05 firmware onto a Verbatim 43888 that's also a BU40N if you ever need to do that, and I believe it will work (someone has already tested this and it worked just fine for that person).
Please do not use the official LG BU40N 1.05 flasher onto the Verbatim 43888 (only use the firmware above with makemkvcon/SDFtool Flasher), otherwise you risk "half-bricking" your drive.

I see, so is 1.0 a good thing to have IF makemkv decrypt key database server should shut down for some reason?MartyMcNuts wrote: Thu Oct 01, 2026 11:42 pm v1.0 is compatible with all good ripping software. MK firmware is only compatible with MakeMKV and Xreveal.
Or would you still need decrypt keys from these other ripper software companies? Also do i just use SDFtool again to flash the 1.0 on top of the 1.03?
Is this the correct 1.0 firmware to use DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_BU10.bin from the downgrade enabled firmware pack on this forum?
I bought MakeMKV long time ago, so i am not too worried about decrypt keys server disappearing, but you never know in this day and age.
Thank you very much

No, the HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_BU10.bin is Buffalo BU10 firmware. In my firmware pack (link in the SDFtool Flasher thread), DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin is what you want. I don't know what it is named in that firmware pack.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Fri Oct 02, 2026 9:16 pmI see, so is 1.0 a good thing to have IF makemkv decrypt key database server should shut down for some reason?MartyMcNuts wrote: Thu Oct 01, 2026 11:42 pm v1.0 is compatible with all good ripping software. OK, so there are different "all you need" firmware packs across the site..MartyMcNuts wrote: Fri Oct 02, 2026 11:35 pmNo, the HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_BU10.bin is Buffalo BU10 firmware. I got the one from the flashing thread here viewtopic.php?t=19634 and flashed this firmware HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934, which i really hope is the right one now, as the ones in your pack is named different and have both the 1.0 and the 1.03 it seems.
The other one mentioned in previous post i got from the downgrade all pack also from a thread on here, but i can't find it now..
But my drive is working with the firmware it got, it can rip 4k, and reading here it seems 1.03 has better writing capability and stability than 1.0, but i don't burn anything other than mp3 cd's for my car, so should be good there.
I only got the drive to make sure i would always be able to rip/watch the retail blurays i still buy.
Anyways, no wonder this is confusing with all these different firmwares.
I really appreciate you helping me with this

Yes, that 1.03 you flashed is the same as my DE_LG_BU40N_1.03-MK.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2026 12:45 amOK, so there are different "all you need" firmware packs across the site..MartyMcNuts wrote: Fri Oct 02, 2026 11:35 pmNo, the HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_BU10.bin is Buffalo BU10 firmware. Re: New Verbatim 43888 questions
I don't think anyone knows exactly why official flashers "half-brick" drives sometimes, but most likely LG flashers were meant to be used mostly on "pure" (Hitachi) LG drives and are not necessarily compatible with Verbatim rebrands, it would seem. So, the problem really is with the flasher itself (and the kind of drive, I suppose), not the firmware.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Fri Oct 02, 2026 9:16 pm However, why would using official flasher and firmware "half brick" my device?
Flashing the 1.05 firmware from RibShark should be safe. You should try flashing it with encryption first (if you ever need to flash it), if that fails, try flashing it without encryption.
The firmware version has nothing to do with decryption keys. If your ripping software is unable to obtain the right decryption keys for your disc, you are not going to be able to rip that disc.I see, so is 1.0 a good thing to have IF makemkv decrypt key database server should shut down for some reason?

Then you're dependent upon the third-party "keydb" people, who generally generate new keys as people encounter them. There is even a topic here dedicated to them.

Woodstock beat me to it, but : If MakeMKV's Device Keys stop being updated for newer versions of AACS, this would likely force users to rely on FindVUK/KEYDB.cfg/DVDFab/the Public KeyDB Disc Submissions thread/possibly Xreveal as well, in order to supply MakeMKV with their own Volume Unique Keys (Unit Keys would be enough if using Xreveal alongside MakeMKV), I believe these VUKs would be found using the Device Keys (among other things) that other people would find.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2026 9:25 pmOK, so what happens if developer of Makemkv stops providing keys for one reason or another?

I will read up on how to actually use these public keys if needed, but for now, i will just keep purchasing physical as long as i can, and now be able to rip them myself.Sayaka wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2026 9:48 pmWoodstock beat me to it, but : If MakeMKV's Device Keys stop being updated for newer versions of AACS, this would likely force users to rely on FindVUK/KEYDB.cfg/DVDFab/the Public KeyDB Disc Submissions thread/possibly Xreveal as well, in order to supply MakeMKV with their own Volume Unique Keys (Unit Keys would be enough if using Xreveal alongside MakeMKV), I believe these VUKs would be found using the Device Keys (among other things) that other people would find.Tsunamijhoe wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2026 9:25 pmOK, so what happens if developer of Makemkv stops providing keys for one reason or another?
