MakeMKV 1.18.4 won't fully launch

I've been using MakeMKV for years and this is a new issue that popped up last night when I tried to rip the new Aqualung Atmos disc. (It worked fine just three days ago when I ripped the movies that arrived on Tuesday.)

Upon launch the UI window never displays on the desktop. Checking Task Manager shows that MakeMKV console application, MakeMKV GUI application (32 bit), and MakeMKV CdRom Device Arbiter service are all running. Total memory consumption for the three are 13.0 MB, 9.0 MB, and 0.5 MB respectively. CPU activity sticks at 0%, while occassionally rising to 0.1% for a few seconds.

I uninstalled and reinstalled (with a freshly downloaded installer) and the behavior does not change. I'm running Windows 11 Pro for Workstations 25H2, build 26200.9445.

I did note that Windows Update did run between Tuesday and yesterday. It installed three security updates (KB5124008, KB5126052, KB5121003).

Has anyone else run into this? I'm going to roll back the OS to before those updates and will report back.

Well, annoyingly, during the reboot after uninstalling the security updates, Windows installs them again. So I'm stuck. Hopefully someone can repro this. Let me know if you all need any additional information.

a google search for "windows update" and the three IDs you gave came up with a number of warnings about things not working after it's installed. One of the things I've found on some windows updates is that, when starting programs, the "I can't verify" dialog box displays BEHIND every window on your desktop, so you have close all other windows to see what it's complaining about.

What Windows often does is block you from using programs that it thinks were "bad", even when you've been using them for a long time. I've had it insist that programs that are 20+ years old a new infections.
