BP60NB10 No Longer Reads, Seeking and Rattle

Post by djreisch »

Hello Brilliant Minds of MakeMKV Forums,

I purchased an LG BP60NB10 back in 2023 and have been using it faithfully since. Not sure how many discs have gone through it, but it's been well loved.

Recently it started making noises. At first it was just a gentle rattle and some extra seeking noises. I assumed it was unbalanced discs. After the noise started to get worse I purchased another drive (just a regular DVD drive) and would put the discs in the BP60NB10 and then in the regular DVD drive to see if the rattle was a disc issue or drive issue. The discs almost never made noise in the other drive.

Below is an uploaded video of the drive with a regular 2-layer DVD in it, showcasing the wonderful noise it makes. It no longer can read discs. It will infinitely rattle and seek until spinning down and MakeMKV saying there was a read error.

I've made sure the ribbon cable isn't rubbing. I've greased the laser rails. I've made sure the screws holding the spindle base are secured. Any suggestions? I fear the answer may be it's just time.
