Hello,
I purchased an external blu-ray usb player in order to rip the audio from my collection of XTC surround sound series blu-rays.

The discs have either never played or seldom played, i have cleaned all of them and they play fine in the drive using 3rd party players such as Leawo and VLC etc.

The discs also play fine on a standard blu-ray player connected to my tv.

However when i try to rip them using MKV, i encounter a multitude of errors, firstly the software struggles to read the discs, i have to re-start the software or re-insert the disc.

Then, when it has read the disc and i have selected what i want to rip, i encounter all sorts of errors.

Scisi errors, hardware and medium errors (offset 0), skipped file errors etc.

I have the drive conneted to a powered external usb hub.

I am starting to wonder if i have skimped too much on the drive - it was cheap, once i have riped the collection i will have little use for it which is why i opted for a low cost unit.

Could the drive itself be the issue?:

If this is the case can you suggest a reliable but cheap as possible drive to purchase via Amazon?

Also does anyone have experience of ripping similar audio blu-rays like the XTX surround sound collection?

Are these discs difficult to rip etc?

Can MakeMKV rip other discs with that drive? Have you tried any other discs?

I don't know, i tried 4 or 5 discs from the same series, none workd so i returned it to Amazon as a bad job.

Well, this drive may have a separate power lead (though one review mentions not getting this), but another review mentions it being based on a Panasonic UJ-120 (discussed here) which suggests you are going to end up returning this too, if 4K or ripping speed has any significance to you.

You presumably don't need anyone to highlight the requirements contradiction here, but you could do worse than consider the Verbatim 43888 (which now contains a LG BU40N) which has been widely discussed here. I have one and while I have not encountered any problems with it, it seems pretty fragile and I'd have little confidence in it lasting a long time without careful treatment.

There are other options and if you are looking for an internal drive (which should last longer by virtue of being secure in your main computer casing) then keep an eye on forum threads like this one for new stock.

I don't need 4k and optimal ripping speeds are of no interest to me.

It arrived today and i successfully ripped the first disk with zero issues.

Very smooth if sedate at ripping (about an hour) and the Foobar program made easy work of converting the ripped files.

Very happy - and im very impressed with this drive for the money!
