Issue with pc dvd usb player reading specific dvds

Post by thatonecookie »

Hello i recently bought some dvds from a thrift store and am having trouble getting them to play on pc its two pirates of the Caribbean curse of black pearl discs they ended up working fine on ps5 and my blu ray players they seem to have no scratches and stuff i think the issue is with some weird drm which involves me first playing them in a JD5700 samsung blu ray player heres the breakdown of what i did
-Both first play in the blu ray player works fine no problems or skipping
-Yesterday i tried to play on my pc using vlc and mpc-hd no dice neither works
-I try other dvds to confirm its not a issue with the player itself or vlc/mpc-hd
-I try using the usb dvd player on another pc to confirm its not a issue with my pc
-I then try on ps5 just in case and that works fine
-I try to backup one of the discs turning it into a iso file and get this error
Backing up disc into folder "D:/Video/backup/DC_PIRATES_OF_CARRIBBIAN BOOTLEG GANGSTA.iso"
Error 'Scsi error - NO SENSE:NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N LD03 M51B5330139' at offset '106172416'
Backup failed

Now im here trying to figure out how to fix the issue the reason i say its some weird drm is because one of the pirates came with a special features disc that worked fine no problem and it wasnt played on the blu ray player so i think its something to do with whatever the blu ray player did sorry if overexplaining just trying to lay out what i did

I have that original "The curse of the black pearl (2-disc collectors edition)

I can copy movie with MakeMKV 1.17.6 without problem. (movie to mkv file.)
MakeMKV scan that disc pretty long time, but still opens it.

Also mpv, plays movie fine with makemkv backend.

lsdvd + libdvdcss2 finds key in seconds and gddrescue makes iso image just fine.

I use Linux only.

Mine disc is region code 2.
I don't use USB drive, but do your drive needs extra power or something?... i don't know...

doesnt seem to be extra power i bought another usb dvd player and it is still not playing so i think its something to do with the disc itself it still plays fine in the blu ray player so i think its some sort of weird drm

It's probably not DRM triggered by the Blu-ray player. The most likely causes are:
  • Your PC DVD drive is having trouble reading this dual-layer DVD.
  • The disc has a read error or copy protection that standalone players handle better.
  • VLC also needs libdvdcss to play many commercial DVDs.
The fact that it works on a PS5 and Blu-ray player but fails with a SCSI read error on two PCs points more toward a drive/disc compatibility issue than DRM. I'd try MakeMKV or a different DVD/Blu-ray drive first.

Neither vlc nor mpv uses makemkv for DVD decryption, as libdvdread is not coded to use / try libmmbd (instead of libdvdcss) like libbluray does (instead of libaacs). (libmmbd is not a drop-in replacement for libdvdcss anyway.)

So yeah if vlc doesn't work either, it's not very likely an MakeMKV problem. Most likely it's just the disc being exceptionally bad (DRM or quality wise), or your drive isn't exceptionally good.

Some Japanese print? Probably expected (to be less problematic in every way)?

Maybe they don't print these discs here in Finland. ;)

Ah, I totally forgot Europe et al. is also Region 2 (coz I'm in Asia).

Anyway, my point was I feel like Region 1 releases are seemingly the worst (among 0-3; have no experience at all with the others).
