Hello Everyone,
I have been having issues with reading some of our Discs and curious if trying to get another Better Drive would help, or if it is just the discs?
The first was a Blu-Ray Godfather Disc 2, then 4K Jumanji - Welcome to the Jungle, then DVD 10,000BC, followed by Alias Season 2 Disks 5 and 6.
I started this in the DVD chat since I have been digging into the DVD issue more.
For instance I have an internal ASUS Blue Ray Drive, an External Verbatim with a UB40, then another ASUS DVD Burner and regular HP DVD drive.
The ASUS Blu-ray says nothing is in the drive, UB40 shows fighting with it then nothing, the HP DVD finds nothing, and the ASUS DVD drive finds 3 out of the 4 Episodes on Disc 5 and 1 out of the 2 episodes on Disc 6.
From there I checked out Season 2 from the Library and neither disc works in any of the drives.
I'm still waiting on the Godfather series to make it to my Library so I can test that as well, but really trying to figure out if a better drive like a Pioneer of other internal drive might smooth out ripping?
When I googled Alias Season 2, it seemed like others have had this same issue with season 2's discs.
Main PC is a Mini-ITX build that I built for running VMs so there is no internal Optical slot. The ones with Optical space are older PCs I was going to recycle, but kept in use for Ripping.
I have ripped a LOT of Blu-ray, regular and 4K as well as many DVDs so these 5 are frustrating, especially when 2 of them were fresh out of sealed sets. I have gently cleaned them with no change.
Thanks in advance and have a great day!

Hit over 1900 views, with zero comments.
Really thought there would have been someone who would have commented on the Pioneer drives or suggestions with fighting these issues.
Picked up an ASUS BW-16D1X-U (LG inside) to try and it immediately ripped 10,000 BC without an issue.
Young Guns failed again, but after checking on the new error, it just required unchecking subtitles and then that ripped.
Godfather II still failed so was able to get my hands on another Godfather II copy and it ripped without an issue. Seemed like a lot of people had issues with this 3 disc set as well.
Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle 4K still failed. Will have to get another copy to rip.
Alias is still missing 1 episode from disk 5 and 1 Episode from Disk 6.
Lots of people seemed to have issues with this season 2.
Should be able to rip through TV Series even faster now with 3 to 4 drives running.
Thanks for your time and have a great day.

Re: Issues reading Disks
Sometimes when I have trouble ripping a dvd I'd try another piece of ripping software as a comparison

That's because you've not given anyone detailed information on what the problem is - what error messages you are receiving, what your drive setup is, etc.AwShoot wrote: Mon Jul 13, 2026 11:18 am Really thought there would have been someone who would have commented on the Pioneer drives or suggestions with fighting these issues.
First, please read the If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first! thread and follow the suggestions there. If none of them help, then please do the following:
- Post your MakeMKV drive description (with one of the failing discs inserted) for each drive (this is the box on the right-hand side that starts with "Drive Information" - please just copy and paste the text, don't take a screenshot or upload a forum attachment);
- For the external drives, confirm that they are either connected directly to the PC or to a powered USB hub - connections via unpowered hubs can result in failures due to insufficient power.
- Copy/paste the text of any error messages you receive on the failing discs.

Currently do not use other ripping software yet, because Makemkv has been working so well till these discs.gkar_of_narn wrote: Mon Jul 13, 2026 1:49 pm Sometimes when I have trouble ripping a dvd I'd try another piece of ripping software as a comparison

1. Gently clean the disc with a soft cloth. Mild non-abrasive soap and water can also be tried. New discs often have a hazy coating that can prevent ripping, and used/rental discs can have dirt and fingerprints.
Cleaned Discs with no change
2. Replace the disc. Just because a disc “looks” perfect doesn’t mean that it IS perfect. Mastering and manufacturing errors do occur and these will prevent successful rips. Please note that it is not uncommon for you to need to replace a disc more than once; discs are produced in large batches so if a mastering error is laid down on one disc, it makes sense that it could be there on all discs from that batch.
I checked out the same disc type from the library to try out for Godfather II and Alias Season 2.
Godfather II ripped issue free, so thinking physical disc issue
Alias season 2, neither disc was readable where I was able to read some tracks of my new discs. sounding like there is something with the Season 2 discs since there are a bunch of posts for the same issue
3. Increase “read retry count”. /faq/item/7
had already set retries to 10 in hopes that would help before posting here
4. Try a different or new drive. No two drives are exactly alike so where one may fail to rip, another has no problems. And drives do fail. Also, if you are using an external drive, use one with an external power supply, not one powered by USB. (http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic ... 049#p51440).
Tried 3 Bluray plus 2 DVD drives for the DVDs.
