Serial code decoding on pioneer drives

Post by babayaga »

Reverse engineering Pioneer serial number format — confirmed month at position 1 (A-M) and country at positions 2-3. Need help identifying the year encoding. Known data points: NIDL001216JP=Sep 2014, SEDL056253WL=May 2005. What formula gives these years?

Pioneer resets their year alphabet periodically.

Position 1 (the first letter) is the Year, and Position 2 (the second letter) is the Month (A through L for Jan-Dec).
Pioneer reset their year cycle to start at 'A' in 2001.

So for NIDL001216JP:

1st char 'N' = 2014 (since A=2001, B=2002... N=2014).

2nd char 'I' = September (9th letter).

For your SEDL drive, the year code 'S' cannot be 2005. In the modern cycle, S = 2019. (In the previous cycle, S = 1998). A drive from 2005 would start with 'E'. It may have been altered

'DL' represents the factory -> Dalian, China
