Flashing ASUS BW-16D1X-U ?BH16NS40

Post by BenHarrison »

Hi,

I'm wanting to flash this new ASUS drive using the SDF Flasher GUI under Windows. The drive was sold as, and MakeMKV lists the product as, ASUS BW-16D1X-U. Other details:

Revision: A105
Firmware date: 2120-12-02 11:14
Drive platform: MT1959

This was shipped as an external USB device, but I have removed it from the enclosure and plugged the internal 5.25" drive directly into SATA. This drive itself says the case model no is BH50N, manufactured May 2025, but then there is also what appears to be some sort of compliance code,
KCC-REM-LGE-DMBH16NS40, which makes it sound very much like an LG drive, though if this is a compliance code then it doesn't necessarily contain the actual model number. Also I'm surprised if a drive manufactured last year is a BH16NS40. Some googling suggests BH50N is NH16NS40.

The Ultimate Guide updated 2026 seems to suggest generically flashing all drives like this to WH16NS60 1.02-MK. But others have used different firmware such as the BW-16D1HT 3.10-MK. The original SDFtool Flasher post also says to flash to WH16NS60 1.02-MK, but that you can then flash to other firmware after that if you wish. I've seen the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00600-212005061331.bin firmware in one of the packs, and this seems to be more specific.

So, do you really think this is a BH16NS40?

If so, I presume starting with the WH16NS60 1.02-MK is the right thing to do?

What is the rationale/advantages/disadvantages of sticking with this or using one of the more specific firmware?

Appreciate your help.

Yes, it is a LG drive. WH16NS60 1.02-MK is the recommended firmware.
Cheers :D
