You might have been lucky and got an older one, before they changed something in the enclosure that stops flashing and libredrive from working.

I ordered it last week, it arrived today. I bought this one because someone on reddit mentioned it'd worked for them. It worked for me too. Don't know what else to tell you. I only had the one UHD movie, but I ordered a couple more so I'll reply here if it suddenly stops working or something.

I placed the Amazon order after I made my original post asking for recommendations, since I ordered a drive that was supposed to work according to the OP, but did not.

Back in about July 2025, they changed something in the enclosure that stops flashing and libredrive from working. You must have received one made before this change.

unblock russia if you have that blocked in your firewall
or use keydb see uhd disc section for that

Honest question, with the supported drives being harder and harder to find, is anyone going to crack this nut for new drives or create something new that works? Or is this hobby going to slowly die as people's drives die? I've been trying to find a backup drive in case another one dies but can't find one anywhere.

I still l'have some drives on-hand, pre-flashed for 4K/UHD & MakeMKV. I have a few more coming, but my cost increased by $30+ USD for what's coming.

I bought a slim-line USB DVD drive/chassis. Swapped the DVD drive to the Archgon, for ripping DVDs, and put the BU40N in the DVD chassis to flash & use.

Just chiming in a bit in case the flash job I just did and the problems I encountered and worked around might help others...

I have an LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS58DUP drive (the hybrid LG/HLDS duplicator model), an up-to-date Windows 11 PC, current MakeMKV, and just used SDFtool Flasher (v1.3.6.0) to flash the drive successfully. There WERE some problems, though:

1. SDFtool Flasher.exe said it couldn't find my copy of MakeMKV. No prob, mine's installed on the D drive, so I copied the whole folder to my C drive and reran the tool, problem solved.

2. The flash job ran for about 20 seconds, the status said "100% Operation finished. Please wait...", then coughed up the following error popup: "ERROR: Command produced error code 0x82062900". Assuming it was some post-check, I clicked OK, closed the tool, and restarted my PC, powering off just before the POST screen, waited 60s, powered on, logged in, launched MakeMKV, and confirmed that the firmware flashing was flawless.

If anyone else runs into the installation drive issue or that error code, I hope this helps.

PPS Claude.ai said it'd scanned this forum and found someone else who had the same error which was fixed with a 2nd flashing, and I was prepared to do that if my post-restart info showed that the flash didn't take.
